4.0 out of 5 stars extraordinary drama -- and all true ! 20 Sep 2009
By DavidW.
Format:Paperback
The failure of D-Day might have meant the end of civilization. The stakes were that high. Hence the drama pervading this account of how electronic espionage and human deception contributed to giving the D-Day troops the edge they needed to win Normandy, and eventually all of Europe. A very detailed account that is all the more dramatic for being understated and often flatly descriptive. Most compelling new information, for me: the battle by the Resistance to slow and disrupt the northward adavnce of the deadly SS Das Reich division of 100 tanks from southern France to Normandy. Hail those heroes!

Time, and subsequent revelations have blunted the impact of this book. But, be under no illusion. No other book is able to capture both the amazing secret war within World War II and the atmosphere of that secret conflict that was only made public knowledge in the mid `70s. You will not be disappointed. It will engender in you, (as a Briton) a great deal of pride, and, no small amount of sympathy for the members of: "The Black Orchestra." You will treasure this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "must-read"! 21 Jun 2002
Format:Hardcover
I am not a great fan of war/military books ... but this is one of the most extraordinary books I have ever read. I should point out that while I seldom re-read books, I am currently on my 4th read of this.
Its better than any fiction you might read about the war.
There are few books I'd recommend unreservedly, but this is one of them.

This book is a riveting account of the enormous (dis)information war that raged between the axis and allies during WWII.

5.0 out of 5 stars The big & little picture 31 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A really great read and easily worth the money. The book manages to give both the big picture as well as going into some incredible detail. There are some superb individual stories within it. Look out for the one about French railway worker who was smuggled out.
