I was attracted to this book partly out of interest in literary biography and partly because I read a very interesting article that Hermione Lee wrote for the Guardian, quite recently, on Penelope Fitzgerald, whose biography I believe she is currently engaged upon. Her writing is poignant, witty and ironic. As she writes of Fitzgerald, she herself has a "characteristic tender, humorous apprehension of oddness and ordinariness....which shine through in memorable images."
There are essays on nearly twenty lives including Shelley's Heart, Pepys' lobsters and Virginia Woolf's nose. She covers all aspects of the biographer's trade including letters, diaries, memoirs and marginal annotations of books read by her subjects. A thoroughly splendid read and probably worth 5 stars.
