5.0 out of 5 stars The only necessary primer for the field! 27 July 2012
Format:Paperback
This book is the ideal introduction to the field of non-verbal communication. In 344 pages experienced Executive Presence Coach, Elizabeth Kuhnke presents a panoramic survey of everything covered individually in body language books out there today: personal space, dating, office interactions, the reciprocity of non-verbal behaviour and self-esteem, cross cultural communication and much more. The impeccably researched material is at all essential points complemented with effective photos and info graphics which stick in the mind (see p.222 on respecting personal space as an example).

Don't be fooled by the `for Dummies' caveat! Elizabeth avoids the exclusion of the specialist research which unfailingly underpins her practical advice on non-verbal communication by sharing advanced knowledge with the reader in a clear and approachable style. The author weaves topical studies from the American Psychological Association, historical and art historical research (see comments on the history of performance, p.12 and posture in paintings p.60) and Darwinian Theory into a tapestry of precisely relevant material. With simple synopses which never compromise on accuracy, Elizabeth makes accessible: Professor Ekman's research on genuine and insincere facial expression (p.76), the physiology of facial muscles (p. 104) and even nuanced zoological research relevant to recognizing and responding to anger (p.80).

Most impressive is the bedrock of the text- this isn't a guide which will help you coerce your co-workers or fool your friends today or tomorrow. Body Language for Dummies is a teaching manual with a view to a long term approach to more meaningful and productive interactions with others. It is clear throughout that Kuhnke's emphasis is on cultivating an awareness of your own habits and those of others to aid understanding and create positive impact.

Kuhnke's fun, often humorous writing style is easy to follow. The encyclopaedic structure (detailed contents page and thorough index) makes it the perfect reference book. For clients in need of tools and information to encourage confidence and effective self-expression, it is the only introductory book I would need to recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Changes perception 13 Sep 2012
Format:Paperback
I knew a little about body language before reading and nothing in here struck me as a revelation, but two things surprised me. One, how fascinating the book came to be. I read it quickly and found the text varied and interesting, full of contemporary references to familiar people (though anti-monarchists may find many of these choices tiring). What really struck me though is how it switched on my ability to see and notice the body language of those around me. That's a fascinating adventure that's just beginning.
