Book Description

Body & Soul Escapes by Caroline Sylge is the first book of its kind, bringing together over 450 inspiring journeys and retreats around the globe. Blending inspiring features with practical first hand experience, the book covers family-run guesthouses, villas and hotels for do-it-yourself retreats in rejuvenating locations; yoga, pilates, tai chi, dance, art & adventure holidays; meditation retreats and ashrams; purpose-built holistic venues offering personal development courses; life coaching weeks; ayurveda and detox resorts; thalassotherapy and thermal spa retreats; destination health spas and extreme fitness weeks. Body & Soul Escapes is aimed at anyone looking to de-stress and re-energise. You might be tired, bored, restless and in need of a challenge, stuck in the wrong career or relationship, or unfit and determined to change your lifestyle. You may be a yoga, tai chi or pilates enthusiast who wants to explore your practice on a deeper level, a sybarite in need of a good pampering, a spiritual warrior wanting to get back to basics, or a stress addict who has forgotten how to eat, sleep and breathe properly. There are venues and holidays to suit every temperament, life stage and budget - hang out at an alternative retreat in France or treat yourself to a chic bikini boot camp in Mexico; get back to basics in a jungle ayurveda retreat in Sri Lanka or express yourself on an artistic retreat in New Zealand; practise yoga on an African safari, cycle alongside monks in Buddhist Laos, or learn to meditate on a hillside in Australia.

About the Author

Caroline Sylge is an experienced UK-based travel journalist who has written for books, magazines, newspapers and websites internationally. She first discovered yoga over 10 years ago in a chilly English village hall, and the power of meditation in a Thai jungle five years after that. She lost her cynicism about alternative therapies when a hypnotherapist and Reiki master helped her give up her smoking habit in her 20s. Now in her 30s, she is a dedicated yoga student who regularly attends meditation retreats, has a penchant for the good things in life and is passionately curious about everything to do with wellbeing, from life coaching to detoxing. Caroline has spent the last five years experimenting with such things on her travels all over the world - Body & Soul Escapes is the kind of book she would like to have read before she set out.

5.0 out of 5 stars best retreat and spa book on the market! 22 May 2007
This book is wonderful. Caroline Sylge's guide is a must for anyone wanting to get more info on a wide array of spas, healing retreats and yoga centres worldwide. The entries range from well-known 5 star resorts to lesser-known hideaways that you would never find out about without this guide. Written with thorough research and fantastic photos, I can highly recommend this book.

Being a coach on one of the featured retreats I thought I had best review the book to see who and what is in the marketplace.

WOW

I hadn't expected quite so much relevant information surrounding the 'concept' of escapes; this really is an excellent reference work for anyone with even the slightest incling to do someting about their 'body & soul'. I went through every page and picked up some really good pointers for my own continuing personal development. I also now have the desire to try some of the other types of escapes; as has been said it is quite an inspiring book.

Well done Caroline.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, informative, irresistible.... 15 Jun 2007
For anyone who needs a break, or wants to make a more longterm shift in their lives, this is the book. Easy, stylish prose; attractive, reader-friendly design; jampacked with info but not at all overwhelming; lovely paper and printing - Caroline Sylge and her publishers have done a brilliant job. I will shortly be making my first escape booking, and I think there will be many more. I recommend this book to anyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars A book to inspire 17 April 2007
A book that makes easy reading but is also inspirational and hard to put down. There is such a variety of venues, locations and topics that it holds something to suit any and every need. Packed with information on what is on offer with all the relevant contact details, this is a one stop shop and the only book you would need to inform you on what to do and where to go.

Having traveled extensively over the years, I have found travel guides indispensable. It was always reassuring to have honest information at my fingertips, and often prevented me from stepping in to dangerous situations and places, as a lone female traveler. There has never been such a book dedicated to relaxation, yoga and retreat venues, until now.

Body & Soul Escapes offers all those looking for some respite from our often stressful lifestyles, a great treat. Within its pages you will find real inspiration, and it takes the guess work out of planning a relaxing, often transformational break away because you know that the venue has been tried and tested, so all you have to do is turn up, breathe a sigh of relief, and get on with enjoying yourself.

The only problem I found with the book, is that I now have a list as long as my arm of new venues and retreats I would like to try. I was left literally salivating over the pages. You will be doing yourself a great disservice if you do not buy this book; it could seriously change your life!

5.0 out of 5 stars great book 23 Sep 2009
A fantastic book- both an inspiring and beautiful coffe table book and a highly informative guide to the best holistic places all over the world. It is written with so much attention to detail and gives you a very clear picture about all the different places. I also particularly like the sections on yoga, meditation etc.
This will definitely help me pick holiday destinations for many years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Escape, Recharge. Indulge. 13 Feb 2008
What I love about this book is its open invitation to go an adventure. As they say, 'it does what it says on the tin'! Caroline's writing style is very accessible and she is clearly passionate about this project. It is a beautifully illustrated book and a lovely read even if you are unlikely to take an actual trip. It has been keeping me sane throughout the murky winter months! A fantastic gift idea too.
