1.0 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere if you want to grind fine enough for espresso, 20 Jun 2005
By A Customer
We got given one of these a couple of years ago as a present ... it now unfortunately sits in the cellar unused as it is no good whatsoever for espresso - the grind-setting just isn't fine enough to get any kind of taste or crema on your espresso shots.

Recommendation ... pay a lot more for a good grinder or go buy a good handheld grinder for half the price if a fine espresso grind is what you are after.

NOTE - We pretty much only make espresso shots (for Cappucino/Lattes etc) and rarely make any filter coffee or other types of coffee ... if a coarser grind is what you're after, then you might be ok with this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Robust and effective, 28 Jan 2006
I've had my Antigua since 1997 and have bought three more as presents for friends. It doesn't pretend to be a top-of-the-line espresso grinder but it copes remarkably well for such a low-priced machine, and I've been very pleased with the espressos I've generated with mine. There may, of course, have been cost-cutting along the way, so it's possibly today's model may be less effective - although my friends haven't complained!

I find I get the best results by removing the catcher and dispensing the ground coffee directly into the filter basket, which fits (at least if it's a Gaggia one) neatly into the recess under the chute. I don't feel the need for a doser - two Bodum scoopfuls of beans make a spot-on double.

Two caveats: firstly, buy a black one, as the white will look grotty in no time and the 'chrome' is just ghastly painted plastic; and secondly, LXX pounds is way too much to pay - Bodum's outlet shops sell this for XL.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a messy item!!, 8 Dec 2006
This item does what it says and feels robust. The ONLY criticism I have is the awful mess it makes due to a static build up in the machine that means that statically charged fine grinds 'stick' together and worse still others fly around. It is not even possible to restrict the mess just to a worktop. I have tried all sorts of remedies and even the manufacturer has not rectified this well known problem. (At least Bodum answer e-mails!). Probably all it needs is to be correctly earthed with a 3 core cable but then that would not suit all european markets! If you buy it you will be pleased that there is no static with first grind. Give it a couple of days and you will be considering putting it back in box and storing away with all those other gadgets that don't quite live up to expectations.
