5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic coffee maker 7 April 2012

I bought this just before Christmas so it's been in constant use for the last 3 1/2 months. I've been through many different coffee makers over the years and for my particular tastes this is the best. No, it won't make you an espresso but if the thing you are after is the best 'long' coffee you can get then I think this device takes some beating. It gives the depth of flavour of a French press except without the sludgey bits - very clean and zingy. It's marginally slower to use than a French press but much quicker than a filter machine and I think the results are far superior.

When I use it, I actually boil the kettle and put boiling water straight into the bottom jug. I then put the coffee-loaded upper funnel into the bottom jug and turn the gas on.

The water immediately rises into the top jug and starts bubbling. I (carefully, it's top heavy!!) give the brewing coffee a stir then I turn the heat down as low as it'll go and give it exactly 3 minutes. At that point, it's off with the heat and remove the jug to a heatproof trivet. A minute or so later, you're good to remove the top funnel and drink.

From the point the kettle boils, it takes you less than 5 mins to have perfect coffee. Using this method, it's repeatable, sludge-free and (for my taste) perfectly brewed. I found the timings a little erratic if I just stuck it on the gas with cold water and of course this method takes longer / uses more energy - the kettle is more efficient :)

It's very simple to clean but of course as it's a whole load of glass the clumsy need not apply! Not a cheap item to drop....

In all, I love it - it was around £45 when I bought it and it seems to have now gone up unfortunately..... Still worth it if you like coffee IMO.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing present 9 Jan 2013
Received coffee maker on time. Chain that enables filter to be pulled into place broke three times - poor quality. Emailed suppliers who asked for photos. Immediately supplied. Nothing heard since. Replaced chain with stronger sink plug chain.
Frequently coffee maker refuses to allow coffee into lower jug because of blockage despite thorough cleaning of grounds every time.
Sad indictment on well known company.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing 10 Dec 2012

This is an amazing piece of kit it produces espresso strength coffee but not thick, it is easy to use easy to clean. My advise if you have only one method of making coffee get one of these! Well worth the money. I have tried all other methods, moka, craftier e, Neapolitans, filters, automated espresso makers etc etc ut nothing like this!

5.0 out of 5 stars Speedy delivery, excellent coffee maker 20 Jan 2010
I was told that the delivery time would be up to four weeks, at the beginning of December. In fact, the coffee maker arrived within a few days. The coffee it makes is excellent, I think I prefer filter coffee from a vacuum coffee maker to espresso-based coffees these days. Can be a bit fiddly to clean, though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Science Museum coffee 8 Jan 2011
By Skip
An attractive object and fun to watch. I have tried this with three different grinds of coffee: filter, cafetiere and espresso. The first two were medium roast and the last was dark roast. All gave excellent coffee with minimum sediment. To get the strength from the filter and cafetiere coffees, I added one extra scoop, but that's a matter of taste. The process will always leave some water in the lower pot (I'm guessing about 100 ml), so the coffee flowing back in will immediately be diluted a little. What's in the box: the two-part glass coffee maker with a plastic handle, a coffee scoop, a plastic lid for the upper pot, a plastic stand that holds the upper pot when not in use. The glass feels delicate, so best to be a bit careful when cleaning it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant coffee maker! 25 Nov 2010

A cup of coffee is judged by the taste, and thus how enjoyable it is or is not.........

And this made me an excellent cup of coffee. It had a lovely strong but clean taste, it was warmer than a drip filter coffee machine with absolutely no grit or sediment in the bottom of the mug, unlike a coffee press.

I also enjoyed watching the gadget do the business as well!

It arrived on the first of the range of dates I was given for delivery as well.

1.0 out of 5 stars Stay away from this product 16 Jan 2013
I was given this as a gift for my birthday. After making three rounds of coffee on it, I return to make the fourth - only to find that the glass had fractured a tiny bit, while cooling off in the kitchen. To cut a long story short, I assume there must be a construction error in the glass, which has surfaced after a bit of use - and I take it to Bodum to get a replacement. Surprisingly, Bodum claims that while the glass is purportedly the "strongest in the world", they don't replace products with broken glass as a policy. However they do offer me to buy the broken part as a spare part, which would only cost me two thirds of the price for the whole product.

I have placed online a picture of the fracture, to document this case:

The coffee you make with this machine is great! However, when you get the coffee maker throw away the instructions and google it instead. Love the coffee, hate to clean the machine

Fantastic product. Would get 5 stars if they included a brush to clean it, and took a few dollars off the price. Seriously overpriced for a little bit of glass and plastic. Read more

This device looks like a Cona Machine but does not cost in excess of three hundred pounds. It is simple to use and produces a good, clear, grounds free coffee.
