3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but poor writing style, 28 Oct 2003

I bought this book for research purposes. Whetter's knowledge of Cornwall is frightening as original record after original record is listed in his footnotes. Names, places, subjects are covered in detail - or at least as much detail as medieval records will allow him to go.

BUT his writing style leaves a lot to be desired for the ordinary general reader. Each paragraph tends to get bogged down in its own mass of detail. Much of what he has to say could be demoted to footnotes so as to allow a broader sweep in the story he has to tell. So for the general reader it's quite hardgoing. But for the specialist there is a wealth of detail here.
