When I found this book last year, I found the hope I had been looking. Therapists and psychiatrists alike have not wanted to help me, because they saw my self-injury problem as something untreatable. Conterio and Lader believe just opposite. After reading thier book, I decided to attend thier S.A.F.E. ALternatives program. It was the best thing I have ever done. I gained insight to my self-injurious behavior and learned the tools it takes to be injury-free. This book offers a lot of good information...and has helped me to educate those around me. I know that the suggestions of Conterio and Lader work...if you use them! I highly commend them for thier work in helping others to become injury-free. They have changed my life forever...

I found this book very useful. It contained a wide variety of stories of self-injuriers. As well as a test to take, to see if you could be a self-injurier. S.A.F.E's actual treatment program. And, more importantly, words of encouragement from self-injuriers themselves. Even if you are unable to stop SI at this point, the rest of the book, is well worth the price.

Marmite- you either love it or you hate it. There's no middle ground. Judging by the other reviews, that's what this book is like. You're either going to love it or you're going to hate it. You're going to find it useful or you're going to wish you hadn't wasted your money. I, sadly, fall into the latter.
I coudln't relate to this book at all. I felt completely unconnected to the case studies. The particual advice and the occasional quizzes may prove useful to some but, for me, seemed to only deal with the problem on a surface value rather than actually develing in and looking at the real reasons behind SI. It all seemed unfortunately simplistic- kind of like a doctor exclaiming "Well, there's your answer!" after telling him that your parents are divorced.

I was glad that I purchased this book. I didn't find the healing program helpful in regards to my self-harm but that's because I have other symptoms I need to focus on. Read more

Finally, A program that definately works.
I recently attended the S.A.F.E. Alternatives program in Chicago and the program has changed my life completely. I no longer feel helpless in the world to which I live. Read more
