This is a brilliant disc. I'd previously thought Boccherini to be a sort of charming but slightly wallpaperish composer of amiable, rather forgettable music. Not any more.
I listened to this disc on the basis that Biondi is occasionally bonkers (try his Mozart Violin Concerti!) but never, ever dull and often quite brilliant. Here, he and Europa Galante are brilliant. From the moment they get stuck into the opening Allegro non molto there is verve, delight and occasionally real pathos in their playing, and the standard of musicianship is amazing. This disc was a complete revelation to me, and now I can see the point of Boccherini. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone. I bet you'll just love it - I do.

No sugar coating here, but vivacious energetic & driving music making

This is an authentic period performance with deep musicality full of associations to Haydn and Beethoven. You won't find any pretty dainty music making here, but rather a driving, energetic, vital and masculine approach to these very imaginative works. This is especially true in the fast movements. In the slow movements there is a highly lyrical singing sweep with a sense of joy and humor. This should not be your first introduction to Boccherini, for these 3 Quintets (with the exception of the filler track of Boccherini's famous Minuet Op. 11) are highly complex and profound and require detailed listening to appreciate and understand. For a first introduction try Brilliant Classics' vol. 1 of Boccherni String Quintets by La Magnifica Comunità for a start, and then maybe the Naxos recording of the Quartets Op. 32 by the Borciani Quartet to get to know Boccherini, then come to this disc, which is superb but demands careful listening attention.Boccherini: String Quintets Vol. 3Boccherini-String Quartets, Op 32 Nos 3-6

Just to make you aware, there is at the time of writing a Virgin Veritas double disc edition which contains both this CD and another featuring a string quartet and two guitar quintets. You may even find this double CD is cheaper than the single.
