Louis Armstrong once expressed his admiration for Bobby Hackett's cornet/trumpet playing by saying that Hackett had `more ingredients' in his playing than Billy Butterfield, who at the time was reckoned to be the great white hope of jazz trumpet playing.

Time's moved on since then so Hackett's playing is now timeless. Only very occasionally did he move outside of the mainstream and dixieland categories of jazz -indeed he might be said to have been an embodiment of the former- but his work was always marked by a sense of economy which ensured that he made every note count.

His way of sidestepping bravado is arguably best summed up on this set by `Don't Be That Way' taken at a medium-up tempo in which Hackett is at his most comfortable, but that's not to say that he was anything other than insouciantly relaxed; because of this Hackett's music now falls easily into the stress-buster category, as he proves on `Embraceable You' a track from the bonus album "Easy Beat" the addition of which bumps the disc's playing time up to a healthy 69.08.

In lesser hands the likes of `High Society' could be so much doggerel, but Hackett's ebullient, and with that ever-present economic sense he makes a considerable musical statement over the course of 02.13. However it's sadly still an occasion to make us realise that Hackett was a one-off and that the music he played catered for a gentler age than the present day. This throws his music into a starker light, but still it shines.

A Dream Come True! 5 July 2011
By El Lippo The Trumpet Man - Published on Amazon.com

When I was a kid and student trumpet player (a LONG, LONG time ago), this recording (then on 12" vinyl) was my first introduction to Bobby Hackett's wonderful playing. Nothing 'fancy' about his style where he didn't play a thousand notes in a measure - just simply and with much taste. His cohorts were each masters of their instruments. As always, Dave McKenna played flawlessly and IMHO was among the greatest jazz pianists to ever exist (which includes players like Oscar Peterson and Herbie Hancock). What makes this CD even more of a bargain is one of Hackett's other quartet recordings - "Easy Beat" as part of the CD. In contrast to this recording's sampling of easy listening mainstream type jazz, I might suggest that Hackett fans listen to his "The Most Beautiful Horn In The World". Hackett is backed up by a genuine movie theater pipe organ played by Johnny Seng (spelling?). At least to me, it is a treasure trove just as "The Bobby Hackett Quartet" CD. Undoubtedly some jazz 'purists' will disagree with my 'review'. But there again, no one is twisting their arm to enjoy Hackett, where they can enjoy whatever pleases them.

This one of Bobby's small groups. Great music from start to finish. The sound is good, don't know what they used for a master. Anyway this is worth the price. Thanks Bobby and Amazon.
