Lesbian Lit Even Gay Guys Will Love 10 Aug. 2010
By Steven L. Jenkins - Published on

Color me tickled pink, Ms. Nolan. With your new novel you've once again made this mucho macho man blush with delight. As a reader often accused of "throwing like a girl," I thrilled to Bobby's every dexterous maneuver on and off the field, wishing only that my clueless seventh-grade phys ed coaches--hunky daddy Mr. Lindsey and rice queen Mr. Wong--had followed her practical pedagogy. Imagine Nancy Drew's Sapphic sister cruising train stations and dive bars while making multiple BFFs with impressionable boarding school girls and solving Hitchcockian crimes...that's Bobby in action. She's as clever a character as Nolan is a spot-on chronicler of her heroine's every exploit. She shoots, she scores!

Hillarious spoof of 50's lesbian pulp mysteries is a must-read! 30 April 2010
By Bob Lind - Published on
Format: Paperback
After an injury sidelined her plans to play professional women's field hockey, Bobby Blanchard accepts a position as "games mistress" and coach at an exclusive girls' boarding school, and soon becomes acquainted with the society-bred group of girls who intimidate most of the students as well as many faculty members. Bobby has to deal with her crush on a fellow teacher, while regretting an incident where she gave in to temptation with an adoring student. She also deals with distractions ranging from a mysterious "glowing" bicycle rider spotted in the woods at night, the suspicious death of a former longtime teacher in a fall from a tower on campus, and a series of unfortunate injuries and illnesses that seem to plague her student hockey team's opponents.

The author succeeds in providing a hilarious parody of 1950's era lesbian pulp novels, along with an engrossing mystery and positive life lesson on accepting oneself. Well written and engrossing, with a wealth of colorful, relatable characters. Score this one as a field goal, and five stars out of five.

A Fun Romp! 7 Mar. 2015

This was a LOT more fun than I expected. Bobby is a very engaging character and field hockey is more subtle than I imagined. Bobby's persistent use of sport metaphor for sex was delightful. Her tsundere relationship with Enid was telegraphed early in the story, but it was fun to watch it evolve.

Are there ANY straight characters in this story? I know, it's a fantasy, but I chuckled through the entire story thinking, "Yep! She's gay."

The little name drops of books were amusing. Those were more innocent days, when S-E-"double field hockey sticks" was SHOCKING! Kids are really disgusting and funny in real life. You have to love them.

If I had quibbles, it would be these: where are the police? Other than their raid on the lesbian bar, the police aren't mentioned at all, which is odd considering the events of the story. I felt, at the end, that the story was twisted out of shape so that the "bad guys" could escape.

And, really, phosphorescent paint on a bicycle? Yeah, like THAT would work!
Field Hockey , Desire & Good Posture 19 July 2010

I'd read Nolan's previous book; Lois Lenz, Lesbian Secretary and after seeing the 2 reviews, dashed out for Bobbie Blanchard and am I glad.. this book is hilarious, sweet and totally affirming due to Nolan's awesome skills at replicating lesbian pulp!
The mixture of repressed passions, P.E and tips for good posture had me up until the wee hours; I couldn't put it down
Lois Lenz fans will be happy to know that Netta Bean makes an appearance as well as a familiar haunt in 'Bay City,' tying the books together..I am now officially hooked and pray Nolan will turn this into a long long series. Lesbians, start laughing;-)

This book was great fun to read. It's written like something out of the 1960s, but was actually first published in 2010. The author, Monica Nolan, did a superb job creating the nostalgia of girls' preparatory schools from years ago. There is also a bit of a mystery woven into the story, which adds to the fun. The writing flows so well that I found it hard to put the book down. In addition, the compromising situations and naivety of Bobbie Blanchard, Games Mistress, had me laughing out loud. Definitely a "best read" on my list.
