Welch solo album receives nice sounding reissue from Wounded Bird. 28 Dec. 2012
By Wayne Klein - Published on
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
The late Bob Welch's fifth solo album was recorded somewhat under duress. He admitted in a 1999 interview that he wouldn't have chosen the songs on the album that, ultimately, appeared on them but did so to appease his new label. For an album that began under such circumstances, it's surprisingly good.

The Wounded Bird label has released the album on CD in a very good sounding reissue. The booklet is sparse--it just has the original credits for the album and, although Kevin Gray is credited as mastering this, I'm not sure if this is for the original vinyl or for the CD reissue. Either way, this sounds very, very good. The CD comes encoded with information that will list the title of each track as you play it.

There aren't any bonus tracks or outtakes included but I'm happy this album is finally being released in the U.S. on CD.

Although "Bob Welch" didn't receive its due when it was released and received mixed critical reviews, time has been kind to this album and it's very, very good.

Welch Takes Two 16 Sept. 2012
By Purple Sub - Published on
Format: Audio CD
Following the success of French Kiss and its follow-up Three Hearts, both of which yielded hits for Bob, he decided to re-center his sound around a more 80's power pop format but continue to use the same power chording that made Ebony Eyes such a classic track. This self-titled effort launches with Two To Do which made the MTV rotation and was every bit as good as Ebony Eyes. What made this LP less successful were the covers of Bend Me Shape Me and You Can't Do That. Neither is bad but both feel like fillers. Having been a Bob Welch fan since his days with Fleetwood Mac, I think he has had a hard time delivering a consistently great LP. Head West is a case in point - don't buy it. So I guess we need to wait for a career anthology (Head West, Paris, Fleetwood Mac and solo). His recent passing just reminded me how talented he was and what a shame it is that he didn't get the commercial success he deserved despite a lot of effort and creativity. In some ways, he reminds me of Mike Pinera (Blues Image, Iron Butterfly, Ramatan, Thee Image and solo) who delivered moments of greatness (Ride Captain Ride and New Day)but never the complete package. RIP Bob.
