This is my first review so here goes.
When I first opened this book, I was hoping that I would gain an insight into the complexities of the man himself.
I anticipated that this book would give me the untold story as it claimed, it hinted at a biography, but rapidly developed into a discography and I would highly recommend it if you are into the nuts and bolts of his career, as this was what made up a large part of the book for me. I found myself becoming a bit frustrated at the first half of the book as it tended to skip back and forth and quote family and business associates, without actually giving reference to whom had made the quote. It redeemed itself in the final 5 chapters or so.
In my eyes it was a fairly sensitive account, although the author seemed somewhat starstruck at mundane things such as getting in a car with Bob and going to the gun court, for example, on the flip side this added to the awe that many have viewed Bob with. Undoubtedly Bob was a strong spirit, he worked hard and his early life was clearly devoid of stability, it left me feeling that Bob lacked so much emotional support or security in is early life that his many short relationships and subsequent children was an attempt to recover this aspect of his emotional well being, however, it is a well known fact that many parents traveled out of Jamaica leaving their children with friends and family, to provide a good living for them and sending back money to keep them in education, etc, so I think that Bob would have found strength in his friendships and the ability to develop the mentality of empowering himself to progress in life in whatever way he could, from a psychological perspective, this may have been fundamental in giving him the strength to continue in his career, where many may have given up at the challenges he would have faced. There were insights into Bob's emotional stability and suggestion that he had become mentally unwell at one point, although I do feel that not enough of the build up to this, indicating the kind of pressures he was under, were allowed to permeate to give the matter enough body and left it as suggestion for me.
With all that said, I did enjoy this book and would recommend this as an excellent read as it did open up some areas of Bob's short life, his wonderful generosity, especially regarding Zimbabwe, and the insight into the disappointment he must have felt after realising that his ideological vision of Africa, became clouded with the reality of politics in a post-colonial state trying to pull itself to freedom amidst corruption and internal power struggles.
One of the most positive things about this book, is that it clearly outlines the circumstances that inspired Bob to write his songs and that was the untold story for me, showing how his life experiences, manifested into lyrics that touch all of us in some way or another and are still very relevant to our lives today. RIP Nesta, I feel that this book has outlined what I truly acknowledge; that you achieved your goals in spreading the message of love, unity and Rastafari, to the world, while remaining true to your principles, precepts and concepts and for that; have my utmost respect... insightful indeed...
