Product Description

Product Description

In this book, Andy Gill assess the circumstances behind Dylan's most famous songs, tracing the artist's progress from young tyro folkie to acclaimed protest singer, and through the subsequent changes which saw him invent folk-rock and transform rock'n'roll with symbolist poetry, before retreating into country-tinged conservatism just as his followers were engaged in the great psychedelic freak-show of the late 1960s. Even then, he couldn't help but innovate, introducing the world to another strain of popular music - country-rock - which would come to dominate the American charts through the next decade. Always one step ahead of the crowd, always pushing himself to extend the boundaries of his art, the Dylan of the 1960s remains a beacon of integrity to which fans and fellow musicians keep returning.

Interesting, compact book of Bob Dylan's early musical output that comprises the period from his debut album `Bob Dylan', released in March 1962, continuing through his subsequent nine studio recorded albums to `Nashville Skyline' being released in April 1969. This is an interesting period in Dylan's output as he progresses from his early folk/acoustic style to his electric folk/rock period and then to a more contemplative folk/country style evident on `John Wesley Harding' and `Nashville Skyline'.
It could be argued that this book may not be the most all-inclusive and authoritative study of Bob Dylan's musical output during this period, and there have been many tomes released vying for that accolade. However, part of what initially attracted me to this book was its compact size (208 pages) and the fact that each album was dealt with in a different chapter containing an introduction as to what was pertinent during that era and a précis of each song from the album. Thus offering the reader the choice of reading this book from cover to cover or alternatively to dip in at wherever chapter their fancy takes them or at whatever song they may be interested in gathering a bit more information about. As mentioned above, if the reader wishes to elaborate or add to any of the information contained in this book there is a plethora of books available on Mr Dylan.
One minor point to note that does not effect the merit of this book is that the author has included within the contents of the book a chapter on `The Basement Tapes', these songs were written during 1967 but were not officially released until June 1975.

Not the best guide 23 May 2011
By Baz
Format:Hardcover
Not really all that good. Most of the pictures have appeared loads of other places or only have a tenuous connection. The stories include a lot of rumours, incorrect facts and information widely available elsewhere. Where Gill was unable to provide much on the background story he could have avoided the padding and given more details on the musicians, studios, etc involved or how the songs were received. There is some of this, but not enough. Overall it comes across as kind of cheap and rushed.

With 100s of Dylan books around you always tend to get different viewpoints and this slim book covers the period from 1961 to 1969.
Its written by a rock critic and because of this you should be able to trust the information.
The other review mentions inaccurate info so maybe he should have written the book.
It doesn't claim to be showing previously unpublshed photos so its rather stupid to criticise the book because of this.
I never noticed anything wrong but then I'm just a collector but don't believe that any facts are wrong when the Foreword lists source information
