Without giving away my age I was a keen fan of Bilk, Barber and Ball way back when.

Toe Tapping Time,

A fantastic compilation for all ages, this double cd has 40 tracks giving you just over two hours of some absolutely great music. I was too little to appreciate any of this at the time so I am happy with this album, I can tap my toes to my heart's content. This album is made up from tracks originally recorded in the 60's and 70's so the sound quality is very good.
Chris Barber, Acker Bilk and Kenny Ball were all proponents of what is known as Trad Jazz (Trad is short for traditional) and the style of this music is the old New Orleans jazz style, which if you listen to this you will see how well they play it. Trad was big especially from the 50's in this country as well as apparently Australia, and indeed when I see some busker groups playing this (usually in the summer) everyone from little children to old age pensioners stand around clapping and tapping their toes. In this day when a lot of music sounds like any other and even the singers sound the same it is refreshing to listen to something that is relaxing and fun. I would wholely recommend anyone to buy this great compilation, and as an afterthought if you have to travel on packed trains in the rush hour I wolud recommend that you download this to your MP3 player. When everyone is getting uptight because of delays and not enough seats you will be oblivious to it all. This album would also be good to introduce someone to jazz for the first time, or as a present for your dad or grandad.

Trad Trio,

Chris Barber, Acker Bilk and Kenny Ball with their respective bands produced countless jazz recordings from 1950s onwards, with many where they shared space on LPs and CDs. This 2CD album is a particularly fine selection of many from the hey day of trad jazz, including their popular hits and traditional numbers, and it represents great value for money.
There is a total of 40 tracks commencing brilliantly with Ottilie Patterson backed by Chris Barber on `When The Saints Go Marching In', and she appears on other favourites as diverse `Basin Street Blues' and `I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate' plus the gospel approach of `Down By The Riverside' and less well known numbers such a `I Hate Myself'. Amongst Barber's instrumentals there is also a wide range including more gospel with `Just A Little While To Stay Here', and the signature tune `Bourbon Street Parade', clarinet test piece `Petite Fleur', Chris' powerful `Ory's Creole Trombone' etc. plus a bevy of excellent numbers. Acker Bilk further enhances the spiritual genre with `Gospel Train' together with many of his popular recordings as `Stranger On The Shore, `A Taste Of Honey', `That's My Home' etc. and more unique numbers as `Creole Jazz'. Kenny Ball is well represented with his hits `Midnight In Moscow', `Samantha', `I Wanna Be Like You' etc. It is not practicable to list all 40 numbers but for a complete review of every track potential purchasers are advised to switch from Audio CD product to the MP3 format with options to listen. However beware that on the MP3 product descriptions there are some discrepancies amongst artists.
