All 12 episodes from the fourth season of the Golden Globe-winning HBO period drama set during the 1920s Prohibition era. Atlantic County Treasurer Enoch 'Nucky' Thompson (Steve Buscemi) sets up a bootlegging business, hoping to get rich. As he progresses in his venture he crosses paths with politicians and mobsters alike but his lavish lifestyle soon leads the federal government to grow suspicious of his activities. In this series, Nucky comes up against Dr. Valentin Narcisse (Jeffrey Wright), a West Indian immigrant looking to take his share of Atlantic City, Richard (Jack Huston) tries to change his life for the better and Chalky (Michael K. Williams) is forced into hiding after a relationship with an aspiring singer goes awry. The episodes are: 'New York Sour', 'Resignation', 'Acres of Diamonds', 'All In', 'Erlkönig', 'The North Star', 'William Wilson', 'The Old Ship of Zion', 'Marriage and Hunting', 'White Horse Pike', 'Havre de Grace' and 'Farewell Daddy Blues'.

The background theme in Season Four is the rise of black gangsters and the power of the FBI. Nucky owes Chalky White a big favour for saving his life in Season Three which he repays by gifting the Onyx Club to him. Chalky comes into contact with a sinister Harlem gangster called Narcisse who uses Marcus Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association as a front for his activities. He is pseudo-religious and rather than supporting the fight for social, political and economic freedom for black Americans he undermines it with hard drugs. The conflict between White and Narcisse runs through the entire season and drags Nucky into choosing sides.
Nucky expands his bootlegging operation into bringing up rum from Florida and he starts an affair with Sally who runs a bar in the alligator infested swamps. Margaret who terminated their marriage turns up in New York and meets an old friend.
Gillian has finally lost any custody or contact with young Tommy Darmody after a hearing finds she ran a bordello and she sinks deeper into desperation but a saviour appears. Richard Harrow suffers a crisis of confidence, as he finds he can no longer kill with impunity, but he too finds someone.
Van Alden just wants to be a family man in Chicago but gets caught between the ruthless O'Banion gang and the more ruthless Capones and must decide between them.
All the while, as the various plots unwind the Bureau of Investigation (an early incarnation of the FBI) and its new Controller Hoover, is looking at the rise of black power and the possibility that there is organised crime in America. They must choose one of these "threats" to America to concentrate their attention.

BOARDWALK EMPIRE's 4th season adds even more brutal violence (yes, it was possible) and brilliant character-study with several supporting cast dominating screen-time (Chalky, Agent Jim, Mr. Purnsley, Will Thompson and the twitchy Dr. Narcisse). Even so, Steve Buscemi remains the #1 reason to follow the show religiously. Lots of fun time is spent in Florida and, of course, in Chicago focusing on the rise of Al Capone (A role and accent mastered by British actor, Stephen Graham).

Overall, the finest gift of the EMPIRE is its dedication to realistic-fiction with spot-on set-pieces, costumes and exquisite jazz along with our anti-heroes believable story-lines over the years. BOARDWALK is a gorgeous, potent, harrowing concoction of the bleak, gang-land 20's. To the lost . . .

This has to be up there as one on the best ever tv series, the stories are addictive and draws the viewer in from the very first episode, so much better than recent cinema offerings, no cgi just pure story telling at its finest. The sets, costumes, performances and period detail are nothing less than stunning. Can't wait for the fifth season!!!!

Boardwalk Empire has, consistently, been one of the most entertaining and interesting series on TV over the last few years. Steve Buscemi is brilliant in the role of Nucky Thompson and, with great support from a broad range of quality actors, brings prohibition-era America vividly to life. So, why only 3 stars? Well - the dvd version is extremely muddy and lacking in clarity. I had the previous three seasons on bluray, so really noticed the difference! I have numerous dvds of films made in the 1970s that have far better definition - so it isn't just the fact that I have been used to the bluray versions. In my opinion HBO have been very sloppy and should be ashamed for letting a poor quality transfer go public. If they are doing this to try to ensure that people buy the bluray version then............!! Come on HBO you should be doing better!

Nucky and the ritz are no more, a darker season with dr narcisse proving a slippery foe for chalky n his new club. More shenanigans from eli n son willie..the fbi involvement only clouds the people in this brilliant season 4. Enjoy
