The Bluffers Guide to Rock.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I obtained the kindle version. Sex, drugs, rock and roll or sex drugs and sausage rolls! After years of working in IT I had seen a fair few dummies, duffers and bluffers guides of one kind or another. I like this sort of book because it often takes away all the 'mysticism' and often gives a good account of the subject matter at hand. I have been interested in music all my life, but I could never have acquired the knowledge or kudos to be regarded as a rock guru because of the width of my taste in music.

The moment I turned on and read the Hunter S Thompson quote, I was hooked. I soon found myself nodding in agreement as I read. I found the authors comments were much the same as my own perceptions. I found myself pausing and reflecting through some paragraphs in detail. The writing is full of information and yet the style is carefully crafted, slick and thought provoking. I found myself being whisked back in time. I was listening to music on my old digital walkman that I had not listened to for a long time. The book reinforces the truth that lay behind many old myths and and pointed out that much could be just explained away as plain stereotypes. I enjoyed the book, though I think the audience will be of a certain age.

Am I a rock guru now - no! But the trip down memory lane was wonderful. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The Bluffer's Guide to Rock by Eamonn Forde for me was a book which I would recommend to all those who like Rock and Roll music, though to be honest when I started reading this book I received more than a good read but an Education of what really counts as good rock music and what really is Rock Music! The writer Eamonn Forde has a full understanding of Rock music and its origins.
For me this book was like learning a new language as before when I thought of the history of Rock music the first person I would automatically think of and that is Buddy Holly or even the King himself Elvis but now I understand so much more and with this little book to hand and with a bit more studying I could possibly bluff my way through a conversation with a Rock devotee without looking rather silly.
Personally I love the Bluffer's range of books and if I want to quickly want to know more about a subject I do consider this range of books would be my first port of call. Other people might disagree and say you would learn more from the internet but how much useless information would I have to go through or even wade through, before I found the necessary information I would need or would consider relevant. These books because of the pocket size and though they do not hold a lot of pages within the brightly designed cover will not take a reader long to go through but as far as I am concerned you will have enough knowledge to bluff your way through or even amaze those who think they know everything will even be stumped with your subject knowledge..
The Bluffer's Guide to Rock Music is a book which I would happily recommend to anyone to buy either as a gift for themselves or a loved one or even to anyone who wants a better knowledge in the wonderful world of Rock Music with information which matters.

I received this book directly from Bluffers in exchange for a honest and frank review which this is.

I received a copy of this book for honest review. 'The Bluffer's Guide to Rock' is essential reading for anyone who wants to call themselves an expert on rock music but is afraid of being caught on important details, such as the current status of Elvis - "He's not dead, of course everyone knows that" - and which recordings you should definitely claim to own.

This guide is both informative and amusing. It's a fairly quick read and packed full of rather a lot of little things I didn't know. Heard of the 27 club? How 'bout the fashions and festivals you should know about? Think you know all there is to know about hidden messages and the devil's involvement in rock? All reasons to pick up this Bluffer's guide and get reading. The writer Eamonn Forde has a dry sense of humour and injects this into the guide at regular intervals. He also appears to have a strong dislike of one of the 'sports metal' bands, which makes for some amusing comments throughout.

The section on the essential recordings is quite long, I counted 17 pages on my ereader, so if you don't enjoy lists of this type I'd suggest skimming it and just stopping to read about the recordings that interest you. It's still written in a fun and factual way but it is a rather lengthy list, illuminating just how long rock has been around.

So, if you think you're an expert already, you may want to reconsider and check this one out! If you have any rock fans to shop for this Christmas you'll want to consider this fun and factual little book.

An odd book from an audience perspective. The book is presented as a bluffer's guide: a way for an newbie to learn enough to pass their way. But it written with a wry sense of humor that only someone with a pretty decent knowledge of the subject will get. A short book able to be read in one sitting, this bluffer's guide is a decent overview of the genres, styles, dress, important albums, movies, books, magazines, and key information of rock music. Just be sure that your are in the right mood for its sense of humor. I did learn a few things, but not a lot new here.
