Biography

Blues legend B.B. King has been spending time this year thinking about "The B.B. King That Was." There is his bricks, mortar and memory project down in a Mississippi blues crossroads, his very own B.B. King Museum, which acknowledges his past. And then, his new Geffen Records CD One Kind Favor which puts the blues maestro in competition, not with other players, but. himself. ... Read more in Amazon's B.B. King Store

With due respect to the other reviewer, I must disagree!
Yes, this is BB with an orchestra, but the arrangements are good, most of the songs very strong, and the guitar playing is beautifully understated. When I bought both this, and Confessin' The Blues, on vinyl, many many years ago, I was a little taken aback, because I was used to listening to blues played by small bands. However, over the years I have come to love these albums. Ok, they don't have 10-minute long guitar solos on every track (most are only 1 chorus - 2 at most), but the albums are a great vehicle, not just for BB's guitar playing, but also for his sometimes under rated singing. Well worth investigating, in my view!

Don't buy this one - it isn't really a B.B. King album at all. The back gives the game away when it says 'arranged, conducted and produced by Johnny Pate'. It would be far more honest to call this a 'Johnny Pate jazz orchestra' album that happens to feature a singer called BB King. I assume Mr. Pate is a former horn player as the horns are REALLY REALLY LOUD THROUGHOUT!!!! There's also a little bit of guitar, but it's so low in the mix most of it is almost inaudible. It's a pity, as this album features 'Worried Dream', which Fleetwood Mac did an excellent version of. The arrangements are very jazzy, and here I don't mean that as a compliment, as they're not at all sympathetic to the music. Truly appalling. I wish I could give it MINUS 5 stars, in fact.

Excellent Blues Album 26 Feb 2007
By The Duder - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
That 5 is really a 4.5.

I don't write reviews usually but the previous reviewers are entirely misguided and wrong, hence the need for another review. This is NOT a compilation disc- it is not a greatest hits collection, and it is not 70 minutes long. "Blues on Top of Blues" was an ALBUM, and a good one at that. The album is very brassy, as B.B. hired a fellow named Johnny Pate (who also worked with Curtis Mayfield) to help him arrange the songs. There are definite gems here- "Paying the Cost to Be the Boss" is a classic, and "Heartbreaker" and "Raining in My Heart" are good cuts. I don't know why I single them out, because it's pretty good end to end- lots of soul, great singing and playing by B.B., and standard era arrangements. This is a major piece that chronicles an important place in B.B. King's career, and should be treated as such. If you are looking for "The Thrill Is Gone," get a different cd, rather than buying this album and then complaining about its absence because you are too stupid to research your purchase!

"Blues on Top of Blues" came out in 1968 (hence the brevity which the other geniuses noted), but it's still pretty much the same quality as the vinyl, so when they remaster it I'll give that the full 5 stars.

Blues on top of Blues 22 Jun 2006
By Stan M. Strawn - Published on Amazon.com

I had this on vinyl years ago, but lost it. I reordered it on CD because the tunes still ring in my mind. The best horn arrangements I've ever heard on a B.B. King album. Not a lot of guitar, but great vocals, great arrangements, Horns are awesomeat times. So many of his albums just repeat previously recorded stuff- THIS IS A GEM!

Interesting sound from one of the greats 21 Jan 2013
By Trevor Adams - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
As stated in the previous two reviews the horn arrangements on this along with a more obscure along selection are the main reasons to own this album. The organ and vocals also sound great!

There are three flaws that I find bothersome enough to whack a star off of my review, but not quite two stars. Firstly whoever mixed this apparently forgot just how great of a guitar player B.B. is because Lucille sounds like she was locked in the bathroom down the hall on all but one track.

Secondly, like many of B.B.'s albums in the 50s the songs are faded out WAY too abruptly. I get the feeling he wanted to carry these songs another minute or two all the way through the set list.

Thirdly, like many of his newly released to cd stuff the liner notes require a magnifying glass to have a prayer of reading. If you're going to charge $16-$18 for a reissue of an old album make it nostalgic for crying out loud.

My real main issue is the drums are louder than Lucille. I can live without the rest. Sort of.
