These are late 50'/early 60's era BB tracks - a period usually overlooked by casual fans. That's a shame, as ALL of the Ace reissues are tremendous; so much so that I would have awarded them a Nobel Prize! This one is solid blues all the way: great singing, playing, band and choice of material. If you are not familiar with this era of BB, it is fairly simple: BB takes a guitar intro, sings 2 - 3 verses, takes 1 - 2 choruses on guitar, then sings some more. There is usually piano or organ, and sometimes a small horn section. You do not get the huge bands and orchestration of his ABC sides these are much more direct. On this disc, all of the songs and performances are strong blues, and you just can't go wrong! Despite the lack of hits ("How Blue Can You Get" was overlooked at the time) this would be a great intro to BB's music, although most would probably prefer a hits package.
This is a great addition to any true blues fan's collection. I am surprised that no one has reviwed this earlier.
