4.0 out of 5 stars Smutty - but superb! 5 Nov 2002
By Andy
Format:Audio CD
Check out the song titles. And what do you think Dana Gillespie might be singing about on this album?
Yes, you guessed right... there's a distinctly smutty tendency to these tunes, a delight in the double entendre and the odd hint of downright filth. But there's also some superbly understated blues playing, casually excellent singing and a real sense of fun. Some of the songs are blues classics and some are Gillespie originals, and without the sleeve notes you'll never tell the difference.
I think this album is a compilation from several earlier albums, and it's a corker. Buy it and enjoy...

5.0 out of 5 stars FUN FOR THOSE OF US THAT AREN'T HUNG UP 28 Jun 2014
Format:MP3 Download|Verified Purchase
I thought I'd increase my downloads of Dana's catalogue of albums and leapt on this one as it is a great representation of her tongue-in-cheek boogie blues tastes and has nearly 76 minutes of tracks. I still find it hard to believe that she is the same Dana Gillespie that used to try to be a groovy pop star back when Bowie hit the big time as Ziggy. Thank gawd she ended up doing stuff like this instead. I truly love this album, but then I love 'Experienced', 'Hot Stuff', 'Big Boy', and ' Staying Power' too. Put it this way,I much prefer to listen to raunchy Dana singing her innuendo laden treats than listening to all those self censoring liars telling us how they (don't) feel.Incidentally, if you want to hear what is probably the first ever recording of the track 'One Hour Mama' that is on this album, check out the version by Victoria Spivey. Brilliant. You'd probably like Victoria Spivey if you like Dana. Victoria Spivey was doing great blues stuff, including songs with very suggestive, tongue-in-cheek, lyrics well over 70 years ago. Check her out.

5.0 out of 5 stars More cheeky fun! 31 July 2013

Dana gives some of her best performances on this album. Maybe not for 'junior's ears but the lyrics are humorous whilst the vocal and players perform brilliantly.
Grab an earful!

4.0 out of 5 stars great blues sound 17 Nov 1998

A friend bought this record more than 10 years ago and let me tape it. Although that tape is long gone and I haven't talked to him in about the same amount of time, I still remember her name. Doesn't that say it all?
1.0 out of 5 stars Re-runs that don't rate .......................... 20 Aug 2013

This is too much of a not very good thing. "My Man Stands Out" could have been good, but she's singing with a cold so it's a wasted opportunity, and is merely a weak copy of Julia Lee 35 years earlier. Everything here sounds cheap and rushed. If you want to hear this type of thing done to perfection, listen to Maria Muldaur in her prime. Her version of "Don't You Make Me High", on her self-titled album, is far superior, recorded eleven years earlier.
5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime double entendre blues! 15 July 2007
By Nigel Patterson - Published on
Format:Audio CD
If you haven't yet experienced the vocal delights of Blues diva, Miss Dana Gillespie, then there's no better place to start than with this album. "Blues It Up" is effectively the Best of Dana Gillespie on the Ace label Volume 1. There is not one weak track on the album and many delights. From My Man Stands Out to Big Ten Inch Record and the classic Sixty Minute Man you are in for a fun, bluesy treat. Gillespie's strong vocal resonates powerfully as she offers 23 tongue in cheek but blues fuelled recordings. Enjoy!
