5.0 out of 5 stars Joe's Second Great Delmark Album 26 Aug 2003
By Mr. C. W. Smith VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
A year after recording the excellent 'Piney Woods Blues' Big Joe Williams strode back into the offices of Delmark, 9 string guitar on his back, bus ticket in his pocket recorded this wonderful set of travelling blues.
After 'Baby Please Don't Go', 'Highway 49' is possibly Joe's best known song and the version here is near as perfect as it gets, each following track is a little gem awaiting to be unearthed, the most lustrous of these being 'Poor Beggar', 'Tiajuana Blues' and the marvelous '45 Blues'.
Joes playing throughout is assured and confident and his voice deep and troubled as well it might have been as all of these tracks were recorded (July 13th & 20th 1961) not long after Joe had received the tragic news that his wife had died back in Texas, Joe had been hoping to move to Chicago with her and his son, he was devestated and left town that spring.
This is excellent recording of Joe supported on some tracks by the steady acoustic bass of Ransom Knowling

5.0 out of 5 stars Rural Blues @ It's Best 25 Dec 2012
By Spectre
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
There are very few really good, well recorded blues records. this & the other Big Joe Delmark release "Piney Woods Blues" are two you should safely lock away. In an industry that must have grossly neglected much of it's Rural Blues talent recording wise, you need to pick up what you can.
I get the impression that Big Joe recorded whenever he could & needed the money, from what I have read he was difficult to work with & only did things his way. None of that matters this is one of the available greats & is recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars After Piney Woods 25 Jan 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is another great Delmark blues CD. Bob Koester, teh owner of Delmark, was teh owner of a jazz record store back in teh 50s and got in on the ground floor of the blues revival that took place around the time of Sam Charters' "The Country Blues" of 1959. Big Joe had been recording since the 30s, but he wasn't much known outside afficianado circles. When Koester located him adn took him into the studio, Joe recorded enough music for more than one album -- the first Koester released was Piney Woods. This is the second, adn it's really marvelous stuff -- tough and harsh, and with all the power of a musical force unleashed. Joe's a great musician -- if you want to get a glimpse of his life, check out Mike Bloomfield's "Me and Big Joe." It's a bit odd, but then, so was Joe.
