If you're relatively new to the bass guitar, and are keen to learn more blues licks and classic songs, then I would strongly recommend you investigate this book. It's a pretty solid introduction to what is a great, and very enjoyable genre of music to play.

The tablature here covers various traditional blues patterns that can be used in multiple songs and during jam sessions. It then goes on to detail different types of intros, ending and fills you can learn to spice up your repertoire. Finally, at the end it provides good transcripts of some killer blues tunes such as "Hideaway", "Pride and Joy" and "Hoochie Coochie Man" (amongst others).

The presentation is clear throughout and the accompanying CD is also good fun to play along too.

All in all, a great little package.

I have got several books in this series. I play bass in a band and wanted to expand my understanding of the blues genre (we play a few blues numbers, although we are not a blues band).
The book follows the same format as others in the series and comes with a really good CD which gives you the chance to hear what is written on the page. A nice feature is the selection of classic blues numbers that are given in the second half of the book.
While I already knew a bit about blues bass, there were some things that were new to me. There was some good advice on how to set the bass and amp to get the "blues feel". I also liked, although probably didn't need it myself--but can see the utlity for a beginner--of working through all the different elements of the blues line from the very beginning. If you are new to blues bass, this will be a very quick way of getting to grip with the basics or if you already play, you might find a useful piece of revision. There were certainly a few tricks here that I was not familiar with.
What I like about this series--and you will find the same approach used in all their books--is the step by step way they work through the material. The clear intention is to give you the tools for you to ultimately develop your own voice through experience and experimentation within the style of playing.
I should say that this book is very focused and it will only be of use if the type of bass you want to play is the blues and are unsure how to start.

This is not a book for the absolute beginner, its part of the Mel Bay Bass System so does not repeat introductory material from other study packs. It introduces various blues styles mostly by examples from well known classics. Interestingly for many of these it distinguishes between how the classics were originally recorded and how they now tend to be played in gigs/jams, and teaches you the current version. Just by Track 11 or so, you are playing Cream's Strange Brew, just like Jack, sort of... Its not a complete blues encyclopaedia, but does not claim to be, but it gives you a good start. So master these songs, and you're on your way.
