Product Description

CD Description

Beautifully recorded and easily the best album of Oliver Nelson's varied career, which, early on, had included stints with Louis Jordan and Quincy Jones, and conducting and arranging for Jimmy Smith (notably "Walk On The Wild Side"). The line-up on this record is formidable and probably enhances the album's high standing - Eric Dolphy (alto and flute), BillEvans (piano), Roy Haynes (drums), Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), George Barrow (baritone) and Nelson (alto, tenor and writer/arranger). It is hard to imagine that the man wholly behind this exceptional album was responsible for the Six Million Dollar Man television series theme. The sublime "Stolen Moments" deserves to be a jazz classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Halfway between Birth of the Cool and Kind of Blue, 21 Feb 2009
By J. Severidt "jornfin" (Rovaniemi, Finland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The book "The House that Trane Built" on the Impulse! label pointed out this album as a crucial release. It is just that.
Strangely, I had not heard of it before, though most of the players are familiar. In fact, the list of personnel reads like a who-is-who: Nelson on alto and tenor sax, Eric Dolphy on flute and alto, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, George Barrow on baritone sax, Bill Evans on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Roy Haynes on drums. Of course, bringing together excellent soloists doesn't necessarily produce good music. But it does here, and how!
All compositions and arrangements are by Nelson, who might just be the most remarkable composer-arranger since Duke Ellington. The whole date has an incredibly relaxed, yet totally focused feel to it. Like everybody is completely immersed, losing themselves in their playing. You get mainly bluesy slow and mid-tempo numbers, with individual solos and shared horn sections alternating. The result is halfway between "Birth of the Cool" and "Kind of Blue" (note the number of former Miles Davis sidemen!).
This is one of the 50 most outstanding jazz recordings that I am aware of. It has to be listened to, to be believed. It also manages an amazing feat by living up to its weird title: This music should be of the greatest interest for fans of more traditional bluesy jazz, but also for friends of more avant-garde stuff.
I don't know any other album quite like it (which is also true of the two Miles releases mentioned for comparison's sakes). Extremely engaging stuff!
