Format: Audio CD
One of the very best 'solo' Johnny Hodges albums, and an essential addition to any Ellington CD collection. Ben Webster and other Ellington luminaries are prominent throughout, and Hodges is on top form. And with Billy Strayhorn on piano, many of the pieces sound like the full Ellington orchestra rather than a smaller solo ensemble. Hodges' solo on 'Don't take your love from me' is one of the most beautiful alto sax solos I have ever heard, and he is very well supported by Strayhorn who provides rich harmonic textures.

One of the frustrations of jazz as an art form is that it has a very competitive edge, with players and fans constantly creating their own mental league tables of great musicianship. People always compare Hodges unfavourably with Parker, pointing out that he was less innovative. Whilst this is no doubt true, albums of this quality prove that it doesn't really matter. Ignore the comparisons - Hodges was a class act.
