Review
Advance praise for 'The Blue Zone': ' 'The Blue Zone' is a tense and chilling thriller with a whole lot of heart.' James Patterson 'Real fear, real thrills, real suspense!real good.' Lee Child 'A spine-chilling mystery with a thrilling twist' Cosmopolitan

Digging too deep for family skeletons proves perilous for a young woman searching for her disappeared father.Gross's solo debut (he's previously collaborated with James Patterson; 2nd Chance, 2004, etc.) has a beguiling setup rooted in the clandestine mechanics of the Witness Protection Program, but its implausible plot will put off more skeptical readers. The book's likable hero is Kate Raab, a cancer researcher launching a promising career. While she also has a model boyfriend, a seemingly perfect doctor, her most discernible asset is a picture-perfect family comprised of her anxious Jewish mother, a pair of precocious siblings and a princely father who calls her "Pumpkin." It all comes crashing down when her father Benjamin, a wealthy Manhattan gold trader, is arrested for laundering money for a Colombia drug cartel led by Oscar Mercado. Benjamin cooperates with the case, and the family is secreted away under assumed identities, leaving Kate behind. Things go further awry when a colleague of Kate's is felled during an inexplicable drive-by shooting and the Rabb family's case worker is tortured to death. The slim leads in the case point towards Benjamin, who disappears into the titular Blue Zone, the FBI moniker indicating a blown cover. Soon, Kate is stalked by a menacing Colombia fixer and uncovers troubling duplicity on the part of her FBI handlers. With the body count rising, Kate hunts for her missing father, inadvertently unspooling a series of preposterous family revelations linking her loved ones to the Mercado clan. A sensationalistic thriller whose credibility is, by the end, strained to the snapping point. (Kirkus Reviews)

4.0 out of 5 stars Nearly as good as Patterson, 25 Jul 2007
By KM (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
As a huge fan of James Patterson's novels I was delighted to see that one of his co-authors, Andrew Gross has began to write solo novels.

In this solo debut (I hear he has signed a three-book deal), 'The Blue Zone' begins when business man Ben Raab is arrested and investigated by the FBI for racketeering. Because of this, high-profile Columbian mobsters are after Raab and his family, so the FBI place them in a protection program, giving them new identities and a new life. However, Raab's oldest daughter, Kate decides not to enter this program and carries on her normal life just without her family and is then driven into a terrifying world of paranoia, not knowing what kind of person her father really was.

After a slowish start this novel then explodes into one of the most exciting and suspense-filled thrillers I have ever read. The style is very similar to Patterson's with it's short chapters, sharp dialogue and fast-paced, non-stop plot twists and action. The characters are all well written and made me feel like I couldn't trust anyone.

This is a great solo debut that I was a little wary about reading as a few of Gross's lastest books with Patterson were some of the weakest (Lifeguard and The Jester in particular) although 2nd Chance, 3rd Degree and Judge & Jury were all excellent. I highly recommend this book to any fan of the crime thriller genre and it is a perfect summer or holiday read that can be read quickly, finished and enjoyed, leaving you looking forward to Gross's next novel.

3.0 out of 5 stars An 'airport read', 25 Jan 2008
By V. Bradley "plaisir de lire" (Italy) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is what I would class as a 'page-turner' and quite a good one at that. Ideal if you have to wait at an airport or the dentist. I was a bit put off by the poor grammar which often obscured the meaning but perhaps that is colloquial American? The character of the heroine's father is not very credible and the story line pivots on that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great solo novel for Andrew Gross!, 9 Aug 2007
By Detra Fitch (USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Benjamin Raab has been buying gold for Argot Manufacturing. Suddenly, the FBI arrests him for money laundering, aiding and abetting a criminal enterprise, and conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government. Benjamin is aghast to learn that the law believes he works for the Mercado family of the Colombian drug cartel. Benjamin insists he is innocent, but the only way out is his testimony against his accomplices and for his family to immediately disappear within the Witness Protection Program. But just before it happens, one of them get cold feet.

Kate Raab is devastated at learning her father has gotten the family into such trouble. Kate marries Greg Herrera, they adopt a dog, and slowly life becomes bearable. But only fourteen months after the mess her father had caused Kate's life begins to fall apart again. Kate keeps seeing strange people watching her. Then her best friend is shot and rushed to the hospital. Someone begins following Kate. But her world totally shatters when she hears that her father has suddenly disappeared into what the WITSEC agency calls "the blue zone" and someone close to him (whom Kate knows as well) is murdered. Kate begins to dig into her father's life. She must find her missing father and, somehow, uncover the secrets someone will kill to keep buried.

**** This thriller is extremely fast paced. Readers must pay close attention or risk missing critical parts of the plot and story. This is the first time that author Andrew Gross has published a solo thriller. In my opinion, it is very well done. This author is one to keep your eye on. I feel that Gross is going to have a long and successful career! ****
