Book Description

6 April 1989
From the battlefields of a Vietnam veteran's memory to an old-time movie hero's search for a serial killer, from Halloween in a special town--where the rules of trick-or-treat are written in blood--to a Texas road where a wrong turn leads to a nest of evil, horror master McCammon is at his terrifying best in this collection of stories.

Robert McCammon is perhaps a little less well known than such people as Stephen King and Dean Koontz - but in my opinion his writings are some of the most powerful in the genera! Starker and sometimes colder and more icy than King's work, I find it deep and potent stuff!

Blue World is a collection of McCammon's short fiction - partnered with a small novel (the title piece) - and it is interesting to see him working on a smaller canvas. After all, other of McCammon's books include Stinger and the vast Swan Song, which is comparable only to Stephen King's The Stand in size.

These stories are exquisite chilling miniatures where familiar things are changed and twisted into something dangerous. Indeed, it is the visionary qualities that make these works stand out, as opposed to any dramatically explicit horror. The best story of all has to be the magnificent 'Doom City'. For sheer icy, crystalline and downright mysterious strangeness and terror I have seen few works to compare with this one. It almost conjures up an atmosphere of a surrealist painting - the haunting, deserted city, peopled by skeletons, and someone - or something - is calling you up on the telephone . . . . . . . . .

It is a story I will not forget - one of those few works that can really linger in the mind. As will most of these pieces. The first piece in the book, Yellowjacket Summer is also a remarkable piece - the lonely world of Highway 241 and the strange and terrifying encounter as Carla Emerson is driving it during the height of summer -

Blue World itself, the book's only novella or small novel is a triumph of modern horror writing. But in my opinion the shorter stories represent the best possible introduction to McCammon's work, before tackling his sometimes extraordinarily long novels....

4.0 out of 5 stars A WORLD BEYOND IMAGINATION... 8 Mar 2012

This is an entertaining and skillfully written collection of twelve short stories and one novella from a master of horror. They range in quality from very good to simply amazing. Those who are fans of the horror genre will delight in these highly imaginative and creepy stories, some of which are downright scary! ). There is definitely something for everyone in this collection, where the mundane is elevated to a sublime level of horror.

My special favorites are "Yellowjacket Summer" (a wrong turn off a highway), "I Scream Man!" (a special game of scrabble), "He'll Come Knocking at Your Door" (a frightening Halloween in a small town), "Chico" (an idiot savant with a special gift), "The Red House" (the significance of being different), and "Something Passed By" (the end of the world as we know it). So, if horror is your genre, do not pass up this collection of artfully crafted stories.
