Writing this because this film in no way deserves three stars...
A rookie police officer becomes a deranged killers fantasy after a violent store robbery shooting.
Blue Steel is a taut, fast paced psychological thriller.
This is a film that rewards looking at it not just as a straight thriller but as a rough exploration of certain themes and fetishes.
Blue Steel revolves around fetish symbolism especially regarding firearms and the image of the police (especially women officers)and power and control/dominance...
At times some of the films explorations seem too brief and even stunted but this is always the problem with an hour and a half running time.
Ron Silver is excellent and so is Jamie Lee Curtis (admittedly I'm not a fan but she is very good in this)... Clancy Brown's character is never given enough play which is one of the films shortfalls.
There are several well shot set pieces and the shootout at the end is super.
Watch it once as a thriller then watch it again to pick up on the subtler stuff.

Oh Jamie! 7 Sep 2011

Although I've owned this DVD for some time I haven't actually watched it for many years..until last night. For starters, I can watch Jamie Lee cross the road and think she is wonderful, and she is here , in this rather messy, unpleasant film. I also admire Kathryn Bigelow, surely one of the most succesful women directors (ever?), but this is not her best except it is very well made and the action scenes are good, except...they really do seem to heavily influenced by "Halloween" (think of the ending). She wrote the script as well, which is full of illogicalities and holes. Ok the film is also for gun lovers everywhere, and I guess that's important, not to me, but to some. Poor Jamie goes through hell in this film, no one believes her (I am sure I counted 6 witnesses and the cashier but NONE could say the robber had a gun when the scene lasts 5 mins and Jamie keeps telling him to "drop the gun"??), nearly everybody seems to distrust/not believe/dislike her, and Ron Silver's motives are never made clear. Still the film moves at a great pace. Jamie, and Ron are very good, and maybe I am a bit too sensitive about the nastiness. Worth seeing and a good print and price.

first things first. this is one of my favourite movies of all time. so unbiased i'm not.

it's a taught, psychological thriller. it's not slick movie. it feels jumpy in a handheld camera way.

bigelow has a habit of taking actors miles out of their perceived box office comfort zones, this is no different.
