Blue Sky Freedom is the story of a white teenage girl, Victoria, growing up in South Africa in the years of apartheid. Her family is liberal and live peacefully and on friendly terms with the blacks they know. But Victoria gradually discovers that the people around her aren't all like that. The darkest sides of the regime she lives under are brought forcefully home to her and to her family through a tragedy that touches them personally. But Victoria is not willing to leave it at that. She is determined to fight injustice, no matter what the cost.
This story is so well written that it jumps off the page. The language and the writing have a completely authentic feel. This is an excellent book for learning about what apartheid meant in South Africa in the 70s and it's also a cracking story.

It came as no surprise to find this new author has been shortlisted for the Waterstones Children's Book Prize, which will be announced in early 2008. I found this book to be very well crafted, intelligently written and quite gripping. Having started in the evening and reading through into the wee hours, my only disappointment is that I must now wait for the follow-up book's release, in which the fate of Blue Sky Freedom's heroine is to be determined. I strongly recommend this book for adolescents as well as adults.

Absolutely fantastic read about apartheid, with some disturbing but necessary detail. Aimed at older teenagers, but I am 51, and it is one of the best books I have ever read.

I found Blue Sky Freedom thoroughly absorbing and I was enthralled throughout.

Blue Sky Freedom is an entertaining and moving adventure, which brilliantly captures the atmosphere of South Africa under apartheid.

I highly recommend this book.

Format: Paperback
You will not learn anything about life under Aparteid as I had hoped. Tired, unbalanced, stereotypes and unrealistic fantasies are the subject matter written in a comic book style. The truth was bad enough, no need to fill young people with leading disinformation.
