The sequel to Adam, Blue Sky Adam picks up the story six years later. Adam, now twenty two is about to graduate as a cellist and is looking for an appointment with an orchestra. He also has a steady boyfriend or two. Yet Sylvan is not forgotten, and a stroke of good fortune is about to place Adam a lot nearer his seducer and lover of six years ago as he learns of the unexpected inheritance of a property in France.

So Adam soon finds himself master of a small vineyard, and with the willing help of Stéphane, the young son of a neighbouring wine grower his needs seem to be catered for both in the vineyard and in bed. But it is Sylvan, now twenty eight, he still loves, and so he attempts to locate him, only to find he is now torn between Stéphane and the practical help and the resources of his fathers vineyard that goes along with him, and his real love, Sylvan. Add to that a few problems of acceptance by the locals, trying to make ends meet financially, and the question of his future, if any, as a cellist, Adam has plenty to think about.

Adam has to consider too his personal relationships, and while he has been used to having more than one lover at a time, including the occasional ménage à trois, will he able to sustain such a lifestyle?

This is a worthy and delightful, if somewhat fanciful, successor to Adam. The writing while at times is a little detached, is at its best when dealing with the the more personal aspects of the story and relationships.

Blue Sky Adam is quite capable of standing on its own, but reading Adam first will add greatly add to the enjoyment of this sequel.

I looked forward to this book with a mixture of eager anticipation and apprehension. 'Adam', to which this is the sequel, was brilliant. It captured the magic of rural France and the exhilaration of sixteen year old Adam's discovery of what he wanted from life intellectually, sexually and emotionally. It had passion, insight and drama.
So, Anthony McDonald set himself a hard task. He has accomplished it beautifully. This is, above all, a love story. But, like all realistic love stores, it is set in a very real world of compicated emotions and relationships. Adam, now 22, has inherited a property and vineyard in the Dordogne. Once again, this book captures the magic of the French countryside in often elegaic terms. But it also captures some of the subtle, and not so subtle, hostilities facing a foreigner - and a gay foreigner at that. At the heart of the story is Adam's juggling of his professional life - part wine-maker, part professional cellist - and his emotional life. Adam loves Sylvain, the wild, uneducated man with whom he had his first, and almost tragic, passionate affair five years earlier. But he is also smitten by his neighbour, Stephane. The intricacy of relationships, the fragility of friendships, the hazards of family - all are here. And if it sounds implausible that Adam can love Sylvain while having passionate sex with Stephane then I can only say: read the book and judge for yourself. I cannot remember a book where the sexuality of the main protagonists, and its expression, was rendered with such compelling force and yet such inherent 'rightness'. A fine book and a great love story.

22 year-old Adam gains a surprise inheritance - a house and vineyard in the South of France. The novel (a sequel to `Adam') explores Adam's shift from adolescent to adult - in part by taking on the responsibilities of the property and developing sustainable work and income. But also by testing out whether the adolescent experience of a cosy `menage a trois', albeit in different form, can be a basis for a longer-term, more adult arrangement. Add to the mix learning to live with the not always sympathetic attitudes of rural France - let alone British middle-class parents, and this is quite a plot. The characterisation makes Adam and his friends not only likeable, but gives them a sense of operating from a position of integrity in their explorations and attempts to grow into adulthood, to make a home and to take their place in the world. A good and worthwhile read.
