Book Description

A dramatic story of love and loss set during the Second World War; a young girl falls in love with two brothers and is forced to make an impossible choice...

Product Description

When Josie is evacuated to her aunt and uncle's farm in Essex, she meets and falls in love with seventeen year old Jumbo, a happy-go-lucky optimistic young man who doesn't let his disability interrupt a life full of fun. Their relationship takes off, despite the difficulties of the war, which interrupts their idyll from time to time with stories of tragedy and death.

But when Josie meets Chris, Jumbo's heroic fighter pilot brother, she experiences feelings that are out of control and dangerous; is this what real love feels like? She is torn between the two young men - one who is steady and loving, the other wayward and challenging. Yet it may not be her choice to make, as the German attack on England becomes more and more dangerous...

Set against the backdrop of the second world war, where people diced with life and death every day, this is a wonderfully moving story of love, passion and tragedy.

Peyton at her best 26 May 2009
Format:Paperback
This is vintage Peyton, wonderfully written with characters who come out of the page to you. An unputdownable read which I devoured and would have immediately read again if my Mother hadn't seen it and grabbed it!

A thrilling love story told in the country side of a world at war.

Set in WWII, Josie lives in London, with her Mother and Father. The news comes that the British troops have evacuated out of Dunkirk - and the Germans are coming.

With fears of being bombed and attacked running high, Josie is sent to live in the country side with her aunt, uncle and cousin. She thinks she'll hate the country side, with no friends to speak to, but soon she finds not only friendship but also love.

Jumbo is warm-hearted, kind and loving, crippled by a mooter bike accident, resulting in him staying at home whilst his elder brother Chris fights in the RAF. When Chris returns to base, Josie finds herself drawn to him in a completely new and wild way. Has she really fallen in love with a man she hardly knows?

This book is a heat wrenching story of love and loss told in a world of war.

I really enjoyed this story and, although perhaps not long at approx 260 pages, the magic of K.M.Peyton is once again at its best. You have the feeling that the war is raging outside, a bomb will drop at any-moment, and that the one you love really is up in the Blue Skies with the Gunfire.

One not to be missed!

Hope this review was helpful :)

Enjoyable historical fiction set during Second World War 1 Jun 2009
By M. Knapp - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I'm a sucker for books set in Britain, and for historical fiction, so I was ready to like this book from page 1. Josie argues with her mom, laughs with her schoolmates (I'll have to look up what "Biggles" refers to) and steals long kisses with her boyfriend. All disrupted when Josie and most of her friends are dispersed throughout the countryside to keep them safe from the expected bombing of London. In her not-always-idyllic new country home, Josie meets two brothers and her cousin, and quickly finds life becoming complicated. Overall I found this a satisfying read, with romance, danger, excitement, history, love and heartbreak. The intended audience is probably 8th-9th grade, but it would appeal to somewhat older readers as well.
