BBC Review

As the prime mover in Creedence Clearwater Revival, John Fogerty created possibly the best rock and roll of the 1960s, swapping mysticism, guitar solos and kaftans for short, punchy rock singles like Bad Moon Rising and Fortunate Son.

His inability to play well with others – like Mark Knopfler, he sacked his own brother; unlike Knopfler, he was sued twice, once for attacking his label boss Saul Zaentz in song and once for ripping himself off – led to a solo incarnation and more great music preceded by an album as the Blue Ridge Rangers, on which he democratically played and sang every note. As with Creedence, this 1973-released album not only cut through the musical self-indulgence of the era, but also fore-fronted some of the greatest songs in what we’d now call the classic Americana song catalogue.

Fogerty enjoyed a sporadic solo career (including the awesome single Almost Saturday Night), and returned to the road a few years ago, which generally revitalised his profile as one of the great rock songwriters. And then he decided, splendidly, to resurrect the Blue Ridge Rangers. Once again it is an album of rock and country covers and – despite the third person singular album title – this time the Rangers are a band.

With celebrity cameos (Bruce Springsteen moos gruffly through The Everly Brothers’ When Will I Be Loved) and a brilliant range of songs, from John Prine’s melancholy Paradise to Robert Geddins’s gloriously daft Haunted House, the album is retro pleasure without boredom and self-indulgence. Fogerty still sings and plays like he means it and this is perhaps why the album’s central paradox – Rick Nelson’s Garden Party, a song about despising nostalgia which here features on an album full of nostalgic songs – works.

All told, it's clear that Fogerty, despite the famous friends and the elderly tunes, still rocks. --David Quantick

Buy the one with the DVD if you are a fan. John gets pretty animated talking like a fan about his heroes Don Henley, Bruce, Rick Nelson and John Denver. It contains a couple of decent acoustic renditions of `Heavens Just A Sin', `Change in the Weather' and `Back Home Again'. There's also a short clip of him and Bruce recording the vocals for `When Will I Be Loved' at Bruce's home. The DVD lasts about 40 minutes and is not intended as a promotional tool - mainly just JCF explaining the ideas behind the album and the process of making it. It finishes off with a trail for the Royal Albert Hall gig. The c.d. is a real cracker by the way: like the first one definitely not `country rock' but country music that beats with the purest rock and roll heart. JCF in a class of his own.

I purchased the original LP of the Blue Ridge Rangers on release in 1973 just as all my old CCR LPs were beginning to show the wear of so much playing after the sad demise of CCR. The post break up issue of live LPs plus the last group release of "Mardi Gras" had proved so disappointing but that 1973 release just blew me away! A full shift into country and gospel music that had only featured in odd tracks on prior CCR releases but what hit you most was the sheer love and craftmanship that had gone into it. 30 plus years on I still listen to it a lot as a very unique one off and the high quality of the overall musicianship, though no credits were ever given to any other musicians involved.

36 years on and John's revisiting of this area after seeing him several times live on tour in recent years was definitely an interesting step. Sadly, the 2009 mock cover of the original 1973 release probably sets the tone overall too well. While the performances are fine the truth is they are mostly just not that great in moving or exciting you. The whole feel is of a crew of very high quality pickers just having a stroll and a good time in the studio. The overall choice of songs also seems a bit perverse - Rick Nelson's "Garden Party" and the Everly's "When will I be loved" benefit little versus the originals despite the esteemed star company present on each and seem out of place. The very blue collar feel to the overall choice of songs on the original has not been reflected or well replaced in the selection on display here.

The real disappointment though is Fogerty's overall performance. The lack of tightness in parts of his vocal interpretations especially and a feeling that none of the musicians are stretching themsleves possibly show a lack of the control freak he is often accused of being in not wasting a second or note on any recording.

Like all long time CCR/Fogerty fans I am sure I will listen to this regularly but just doubt it will be anywhere near as often as the original source release.

Fogerty rides again 4 Oct 2009
Format:Audio CD
Blue Ridge Rangers; Rides Again, showcases twelves songs as John Fogerty's homage to the American Songbook. Mainly old Country tracks with some covers from the rock'n roll genre. 'Garden Party' by his late friend and favourite Rick Nelson is a grand tribute and ably supported by Don Henley and Timothy B Schmidt of the Eagles. Bruce Springsteen makes an appearance on the Everly Brothers classic 'When will I be loved' and there's a bit of a surprise with a version of Pat Boone's best hit 'Moody River'. Also thrown into the mix is 'Never ending song of love' which was a big hit for the New Seekers in the UK but John is probably doffing his hat here to the writers Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett and their version. The eclectic mix also includes songs from John Prine, Buck Owens, John Denver, Ray Price, Jerry Gillespie and,er, John Fogerty ('Change in the Weather' from the 'Eye of the Zombie' album). All are delivered in John's inimitable style using his Blue Ridge Ranger persona and is backed by an astounding band. This is a great album, the pleasure of which will be enhanced by purchasing the deluxe CD+DVD version, which includes John talking about the making of the album and film of rehearsals with The Boss.
