Product Description

Product Description

Half a century ago Blue Peter set sail. In the early days no one at the BBC realized what a success it would be, but over the decades it has provided some of television's most iconic moments. 50 years later, it is still at the core of children's programming at the BBC. Beautifully illustrated with many rare and previously unpublished photographs, this is the official celebration of a national treasure. Read the fascinating inside stories of this amazing programme, from its evolution to the people and animals who captured the imagination and entertained and educated millions of the nation's youth across generations. Revive memories of presenters, pets, makes, appeals, special assignments, famous guests, badges and more, and let this wonderful book delight and entertain you just as the programme did when you were young.

About the Author

After winning his first Blue Peter badge in 1972, Richard Marson joined the BBC in 1988 and worked on many flagship programmes including Going Live!, Top of the Pops and, of course, Blue Peter. After spending five years as a freelance Producer/Director for a range of companies including Disney, Planet 24 and LWT, he returned to the BBC to direct Record Breakers and Tomorrow's World, and this led to the chance to join Blue Peter as a Producer in 1998. In the decade which followed, Richard became first the Series Producer and then the Editor, editing over 500 editions before leaving the show in the summer of 2007.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, informative and enjoyable- a fascinating read, 27 Oct 2008

Fifty years of a successful programme means that several generations have grown up watching it; I was a 60s/early 70s Blue Peter kid who watched it with my children and now watch it with my grandchildren. The show's former editor Richard Marson is an insightful author who has sourced many photographs never seen before, as well as familiar shots of well-remembered moments.

Tensions between presenters are not shirked, but neither are they sensationalised and the demanding challenges the programme set those involved are very clear. For the majority of those who chose to present it, Blue Peter owned their lives. Some, like Mark Curry, were strong enough to negotiate independent terms and retain a life outside BP, others, like Katy Hill, disappeared off the radar once their involvement with the show was over.

If you remember something being a feature of the show, this book mentions it - the Nuremburg crib and Advent crown at Christmas, Joey and Barney the ill-fated parrots, and the boxes for the Year 2000 are all recaptured here, along with many other great moments.

A wonderful book for anyone who enjoyed this iconic programme over the last fifty years. I won my copy in a competition (thanks, TV Cream) and when it arrived I finally felt like a badge winner... if you were one of the millions who never got one too, this would be a lovely consolation prize!

Sincerest thanks to the author- Richard Marson, not Biddy Baxter, Amazon!- for a fine job that hasn't let fans down at all, and good wishes to him for the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential read for a BP fan, 9 Feb 2009

I've always loved "Blue Peter", and even now I never feel truly Christmassy if I haven't seen the "Blue Peter" Christmas show, complete with the final candle on the Advent Crown being lit. When I heard Richard Marson - the series editor of what may well be the finest era of the show's history (including presenters like Konnie Huq, Matt Baker, Simon Thomas, Liz Barker, Gethin Jones and so on) - was writing this book I knew I wanted a copy.

Simply put, this book is a joy to read. Loaded with pictures from the show and biographies of the presenters, the book takes you from the early days to the present day, telling the behind the scenes story of one of our most loved childrens' shows. Even those who aren't huge fans of the show will still find much to love here, and find themselves crying "I remember that!" from time to time. As well as being a good read the book looks great too - covered with blue foil, and adorned with an embossed ship logo as drawn by the late, great Tony Hart - so even your bookshelf will love you for buying this.

An absolute treat.
