Just to back up the other positive review of this collection. If you have any others from the Blue Note Trip series you'll know what to expect - a mix of classics from their archive of accessible jazz / funk from the late 60s and early seventies together with more recent stuff, and this one is as good as the rest. If you are new to this series, you get two discs of material chosen and unobtrusively mixed by a Dutch acid jazz dj working under the name Maestro. Two in the series are put together by the German dj collective Jazzanova. The Maestro stuff tends towards imaginative laid-back beats and some soul-tinged vocals, usually with contributions from people like Horace Silver, Lee Morgan, Soulive, Donald Byrd, etc. There are no breaks between tracks and each disc is over an hour.
It will introduce you to lots of great material that you may otherwise have missed, and reinvigorate tracks you may have forgotten. I wasn't really a fan of dj mixes before these, but this series is a good example of how thoughtful sequencing can enhance the effect of good jazz. Sometimes a whole album from the same session can get a bit samey, but these CDs will return to your player frequently.
Really great stuff, and I hope Blue Note commission him to do more.
