Product Description

Product Description

Special Deluxe Collector's Edition / Fully Remastered Sound shaped from 24 BIT digital technology / Features John Sykes (Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy), Carmine Appice (Ozzy Osbourne) and Tony Franklin (the Firm) / 12 page full colour booklet 3,500 word essay, enhanced artwork and new interview with John Sykes WHEN IT comes to hard rock contenders no band was more feted than Blue Murder. Masterminded by British-born super guitarist John Sykes, who had previously played pivotal roles in the Tygers Of Pan Tang, Thin Lizzy and Whitesnake, the birth of Blue Murder triggered huge anticipation amongst the hard rock community. At this time, Sykes' stock was at an all-time high and his dismissal from Whitesnake at the peak of their success with the multiplatinum '1987' album, seemed utterly senseless. Quick to maintain momentum, Sykes pieced together the fledgling Blue Murder by enlisting A-grade support in the form of bassist Tony Franklin (from the Firm) and seasoned drummer Carmine Appice (Ozzy Osbourne, Jeff Beck). It was a classic power trio set-up with a musical direction influenced by both modern and traditional styles, from Led Zeppelin to the bluesy bluster of Whitesnake. Signed to Geffen Records, the album was produced by studio mastermind Bob Rock (Metallica, Bon Jovi, the CULT) and mixed by Mike Fraser. It stunned critics and fans alike, containing long, often complicated, tracks with ambitious arrangements and a panoramic production that emphasised creativity over commerciality. As a statement of intent the album massively succeeded in establishing Sykes as a major creative force with a rock solid reputation that has served him well over the subsequent years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good hard rock with some metal moments 1 May 2001
Format:Audio CD
This CD is a "callback" to the old hard rock with some elements of doomy blues. John Sykes's guitar solos are really outstanding - the balancing between the hard rock, metal and blues is quite difficult, but he fulfills this task perfectly. Songs like "Valley of the Kings", "Out of Love" and "Ptolemy" demonstrate it clearly. Buy this CD, enjoy a wonderful mixture of styles!

John Sykes here is totally the boss here ,not only does he shred as you would expect, but he sings too,as well as being the main songwriter. This is a really good debut, the first 3 songs are superb and Sykesy is well supported by Tony Franklin on the bass and the ancient Carmine Appice on drums. The arrangement of songs are varied (a long way from The Tygers of Pan Tang)and theres no 3 minute pop hits here, but if you are prepared to listen, there is plenty of melodic heavy rock and substance here. For me ,after this ,Sykesy's career started to decline,as did his guitar playing.Nowadays in concert he has lost variety, restraint and feeling, there are too many pinched harmonics and squeals and distortion dripping vibrato, which is a huge pity. It's almost like he feels he's in competition with that overrated guitarist who's famous for playing other guy's stuff, Zakk Wylde. John Sykes is genuinely super talented as this album proves, but I must confess the ballad on here 'Out of love'is too sickly and I always skip it!Song highlights;Riot & Sexchild are many layered rockers.Valley of the kings is a mid tempo epic.Jelly Roll a semi-acoustic/electric pop song,Billy & Black Hearted Woman feature some fantastic riffs, great tunes the both.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blue Murder 10 April 2014

What is there not to like about 1980's glam/hair rock. This album was recommended in Classic Rock magazine so I bought it and it is indeed a 'lost gem'.

5.0 out of 5 stars better than it was on release 2 Mar 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
as a whitesnake fan this album is a must and its both got echos of Whitesnake as well as enough about it to stand alone.

Jelly roll is a trully excellent track and the production is great.

4.0 out of 5 stars SCREAMIN' BLUE MURDER..!!!!!! 16 May 2013
By Mr Blackwell TOP 500 REVIEWER

I know thats the title of Girlschools' 3rd album but it the best way to describe this disc,at the top of your voice,i thought that back in '89 and still do,i lost the disc many moons ago and have recently re purchased.

Clearly stunned by his removal/departure from Whitesnake,Sykes set out to record 1987 part 2,for the most part he succeeds.Indeed the opening trio of 'Riot','Sex Child' (cringeworthy title sadly) and 'Valley of the Kings' all smoulder with that 'Still of the Night' bravado that Coverdale captured with ease.

Other highlights would be the Zeppelin wannabee 'Jelly Roll',while the title track just thunders from the speakers and the hit single that never was 'out of love' are all highpoints, the rest excellent.

The production is of its time (Bob Rock ),it captures the astonishing musicianship of 3 top drawer performers,Tony Franklin's Bass in particular just bubbles from the speakers, even better with the headphones on. Probably the only part that held them back, depite his pretty good vocals,Syles might have been better to involve a frontman, possibly even several guests, where Coverdale could have wrapped his velvet vocals around the aforementione 'Out of Love',it would have been a hit, someone like Ronnie James Dio could have taken 'Valley of the Kings' to even greater height.

Still its an excellent disc, not sure about the 'pirate' look though!!,well worth taking a chance on,sadly it was all downhill from here, a real pity.

4.0 out of 5 stars cheesy rock 11 Jan 2013
By john
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
well worth a listen - john sykes relieves his whitesnake 1987 album well, but not all the songs are up to the standard of jelly roll - an absolute classic. some elements a bit pretentious, but then again i rather like that!
