Very Unpleasant Viewing the Second Time Around
on 19 October 2012
I purchased this series - in various pieces, until I had the complete set. Thought I really enjoyed it the first time it was viewed. After a few years, I sometimes re-watch what I remember as a good British mystery. Should have left well enough, alone - and sold it on Ebay. On the second view, Caroline Quentin as DCI Janine Lewis REALLY comes across as a jealous, spiteful, hateful, vengeful, man-hater. She certainly doesn't earn mother of the year awards, and cannot accept responsibility for her own miseries / mistakes. Yet, she truly tries to destroy anyone - who crosses her path (or is in her wide path) - who appear to be happy (or just plain together, and happy w/ themselves). She'll go out of her way to attempt to crush a man - even if he's innocent - she appears to view all men as something to weaken. And let's face it - this is no femme fatale.
I didn't notice it in the first viewing, but she could be the twin sister of a similar demon woman - whose path I crossed (and quickly escaped from) in 1984. If you're a guy, you might just want to pass this one by. Try something w/ class and dignity - like Lewis, Morse, Kavanagh, Foyle's War, New Tricks, Prime Suspect, Frost, George Gently, etc.
