Review

"An agreeable amalgam of offbeat characters, mildly salacious humor, and tarot card reading" -- "Publishers Weekly"

Product Description

JJ, an artist and professional dominatrix comes into the possession of pornographic pictures of a local thug after a disastrous date with a man who died under suspicious circumstances. It seems that both were involved in making pornographic films with Angell Falls and JJ’s transvestite ex-husband, Tamara.

The only common link seems to be the notorious Pink Parrot night club on the Sussex coast – the haunt of all lovers of kink, who make full use of the dungeon playroom and private booths.

Trying to steer clear of alcohol and other less socially acceptable drugs JJ finds herself falling off the wagon time after time and landing herself in ever deeper mischief.

As the body count mounts, JJ’s own life is threatened as she gets closer to the truth, a truth made more complex by her sexual infatuation with Max, an enigmatic (and kinky) sax player.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thrilling page turner 22 July 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is fantastic book from the multi-talented Ruth Ramesden. As a fan of Ruth's visual art work (the illustration work in the "Dark Tantra Tarot" is beautiful and elegantly twisted) I was unsure as to how I would get on with her written output. Frankly I was blown away by this pacey, noir thriller set on the south coast of England. Ruth vividly depicts a dark under belly of dominatrixes, cross-dressing and free jazz-her pacing is superb, she has a great sense of comedy and she has created characters that you can care about.

All that and you get some of her tarot illustrations thrown in as well-what's not to like.

Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars birthdaydelight 12 Feb 2013

I was delighted to discover that my birthday present was a witty, well written thriller that walked on the dark side. Ruth's illustrations were an added bonus,a clever twist on both the Tarot and the plot. Her artist's eye ensured that the characters and their environment were similarly well drawn. I found myself still reading at 3 a.m. Looking forward to the next one, Ruth.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surreal, touching, comic. 5 Nov 2012
Format:Paperback
'Blue Murder at the Pink Parrot' is, superficially at least, a thriller, set in a variety of netherworlds - transvestitism, transexualism, the British South Coast drug scene - all addressed with a wry touch that makes a fascinating backdrop to a twisting and thoroughly surreal plot. Managing to be both comic and suspenseful, it's an unusual achievement, combining a likeably self-deprecatory and witty narrator with real insight into the soft and hard edges of sexuality and gender dysphoria. It's rare to find a memorable thriller, these days, but for all the lurid and flamboyant cross-dressing and multiple levels of mistaken identity, there's more depth here than is apparent at first glance. Ruth Ramsden's succeeded in rendering accessible a story that takes place in worlds most of us never come into contact with, subtly subverting the conventions of the thriller even as it follows them. There's a lyrical and observant voice here that rings true, despite the gaudy settings and at times unlikely unfolding of the plot: I hope it has a whole lot more to say.
