About the Author

Colin Watson was born in 1920. He worked as a journalist but was most famous for his twelve 'Flaxborough' novels, set in a small fictional town in England. Four of the 'Flaxborough' novels were adapted for television by the BBC under the series title Murder Most English and Watson's Detective Inspector Purbright remains one of the most intellectual detectives in the crime genre. Colin Watson died in 1983. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Delighted that these are available once more and I've now got them all. The "Murder Most English" DVD with four of the novels, is also not bad. The author's pet hates - hypocrites and self-regulated professions shine through and are every bit as relevant today as when the series of books first appeared.

Scandal for Flaxborough 12 April 2012
By Damaskcat TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Journalists working for a national newspaper are visiting Flaxborough but are trying to keep a low profile. When one of them slightly injures a police constable in a traffic accident their hope of anonymity disappears. A critical article about Flaxborough appears in a Sunday newspaper and the mayor challenges the reporter to a duel; when the investigative journalist is found dead Inspector Purbright gets involved.

Is it murder by an offended citizen of Flaxborough? Or is it something to do with the cut throat world of investigative journalism or perhaps to do with the pornographic film which appears to have been filmed in Flaxborough? The plot is complex with many strands, both past and present. Everyone has secrets to hide and Purbright has to try and find his way through the muddle and work out who killed the journalist.

This book is as well written as the rest of this enjoyable series. Small town life will never seem the same once you have become acquainted with Flaxborough and its inhabitants. The series can be read in any order.
