Introducing Nessie - the first adaptive USB mic for fearless recording

Nessie takes the fear out of great recording by instantly delivering studio-enhanced sound for desktop recording of vocals, instruments, voiceovers and more.

Designed to combat the most common pitfalls of recording, Nessie automatically adapts to whatever you’re recording, applying professional studio processing combined with a built-in pop filter and internal shockmount, to produce expertly finished sound, without the need for additional mixing or editing. Just as the latest point-and-shoot cameras will reduce redeye and automatically adjust focus and exposure for improved photos, Nessie professionally enhances audio so that you get polished music demos, podcasts, interviews, YouTube broadcasts and more, instantly!

The built-in, studio-grade pop filter and shockmount reduce harsh plosives and disruptive rumbling and vibrations, while the adaptive processing, including EQ, de-esser and level control, automatically smoothes and refines your audio in real time.

No matter what you want to record, Nessie takes the guesswork out of great recording!

Nessie’s three flexible recording modes are optimized for richer vocals, more detailed instruments or an option for raw audio for manual post-production editing. Nessie employs a single custom-tuned condenser capsule with a cardioid pattern.

Nessie also features a zero-latency headphone output for direct monitoring, which is critical for eliminating distracting delay, while headphone volume and instant mute are located directly on the microphone. For optimal positioning, Nessie’s head adjusts with serpentine flexibility. Nessie is plug-and-play compatible via USB with both PC and Mac with driverless installation. For mobile recording, you can connect Nessie to iPad using Apple’s camera adapters (30-pin to USB or Lighting to USB) and a powered USB hub, both sold separately.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
The first thing you notice about this microphone is how lovely looking it is. The retro design really works in its favour. It is also easy to handle and nice and light without feeling tacky. It has clearly had a lot of design thought put into it.

We found that the microphone was fairly simple to set up and after a short while messing about with our settings we were up and running. It was easy to record conversations and when we worked on some basic music all seemed to work well. That said this is not the best microphone out there but it does a decent job for anyone wishing to record at home. If you are looking for top end recording then this is not the mic for you, but for those of us who are just keen amateurs or who only need to record now and again then this is great. It packs away neatly and doesn't take up a lot of space.

I think that when you purchase this you are buying the design as much as you are the recording features and as such it may seem a little expensive compared to some products out there. That said as I am heavily involved in the theatrical world this mic will be wonderful for live radio plays and using sound on stage as well as recording at home. Great stuff!

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
There are two uses I have for this microphone, the first being to record some voice-overs for some website video I am doing, and the other is in cahoots with a musical-minded friend who normally resorts to a more convoluted sound-recording setup to cover vocals.

First impressions are good, in a "War-of-the-Worlds" kind of way. The styling might not be to everyone's tastes, but I rather like it. I suspect the hinged neck might loosen over time so it's worth keeping an eye on it and tightening it if possible.

The ergonomics and controls are all adequate for the job, and I like the rotary dial integrated into the weighted base.

Actual performance of the mic is really good. For vocal recordings it seems to add a slight warmth to my voice. When a colleague tried it he commented that it made him sound like Terry Wogan - which is meant as a complement to the microphone and not a criticism - as he thought it made him sound quite "recordable".

For music it has a setting which presumably adjusts some internal levels or sensitivities. What results is a pleasing and rich vocal track which we were both rather impressed with. It should be fairly obvious that this is a desk-based cardioid microphone so is tailored to close-quarters vocal recording from directly in front of the microphone and is not suited to room-level recording.

After a bit of messing about to get the mic to work with my friend's current recording setup we sat down with his acoustic to do some recording on Cubase. The first thing we noticed was the input gain is very low on the mic so we had to tweak it to get a decent input level.

This is a fantastic microphone.

Well built, you can tell it is quality right out of the box.

It is a bit expensive but worth it.

Easy to use, installs immediately and works straight away.

I love the built in pop filter.

I totally recommend this.

Firstly, after unboxing Nessie you can tell that it is a decent piece of kit. With a fair weight to it, this product seems sturdy with all the features you could need for amateur recording at home. Although it looks like it is all metal in the pictures, Nessie is actually mostly made of plastic - only the volume control and condenser capsule are metal.
With 3 simple recording settings (raw sound, voice and music), the mic is pretty much good to go as soon as you plug it into your computer. The serpentine adjustable head gives it nice flexibility and Nessie would not look out of place in a studio.

I would warn mac users to turn up the volume levels of Nessie, as volume levels were very low before I changed its settings in system preferences. You also have to be careful of its touch-sensitive mute button. This is a nice feature, but you have to be careful not to accidentally set your mic to mute during recording. A pulsing light on the base of Nessie will warn you that you are in mute - another feature that makes Nessie so simple and clear.

The recording quality is great and unlike many other microphones, Nessie applies all of the studio settings you would need as soon as you hit record. In garageband, I don't need to apply any effects to make it sound better - I can just focus on tailoring my editing to getting the feel right. With barely-noticeable feedback in the earphones, you wouldn't want much more from a mic than Nessie to record your songs, voiceovers and broadcasts at home

This great high quality mic, is a perfect boon to anybody who wants to record audio on their PC. I use it to record voice over screen captures showing people how to use software, and to document bugs. The device has a very nice pre-processor for dynamic adjustment which is for either music or vocals with the option to switch this off and deliver just the raw audio to the PC for processing later.
Overall a perfect device which does its job and looks nice on the desk. I think I might be buying a second one for use at home.
