Biography

“Sgt Pepper’s killed music!” Bell X1 frontman Paul Noonan is laughing down the phone from Dublin. “Ian Stewart said so. Wonderful as it is, it encouraged people to use the studio as an instrument, to faff away in there to their heart’s content. Instead of having their shit together before they went in, and to use the studio take a good photograph of where ... Read more in Amazon's Bell X1 Store

3.0 out of 5 stars This isn't it, not yet 17 Oct 2009
Format:Audio CD
I already have 'Flock' and 'Music in Mouth', and I know these guys have got great music in them (if you don't know them, try 'Bad Skin Day' or 'Alphabet Soup'). One day they're going to produce their 'Seldom Seen Kid', but unfortunately this isn't it. There aren't any really bad tracks, but equally nothing that gets me out of my seat. Try 'Curtain's are Twitchin'' or 'Great Defector'. Neither are brilliant, but they're as good as it gets here. But if you decide not to go for this, keep an eye out, their next release may be the one ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet album! 10 Sep 2009

Format:Audio CD
I stumbled across their track 'Great Defector' on last FM and loved that, a really happy Talking Heads-sounding track with a catchy hook and African guitar style..... Damn catchy!! This prompted me to get the album and I've got to say, it's pretty good stuff. The rest of the album is not in the same style as this track, but quite chilled but still a pleasure to listen to. Blue Lights On The Runway contains some gems:)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellence in Music 19 Feb 2009

I love Flock - after being introduced to Bell X1 by my old friend Dr. Chris, I quickly realized what a special band they are and what a special album Flock is.

With their new album they continue in a similar vein to Flock, albeit I feel, a little more downbeat and soulful. All that's good about music is present here and the current crop of "next best rock band" must surely listen and weep.

I've only played this album 3 times but wanted to share my first impressions - this album will be huge and with a few more listens will cement itself in my music heart next to Flock - nice one guys you have a winner here

4.0 out of 5 stars Talking Heads for the modern era 7 July 2009

Mixing synth pop sounds in with David Byrne type vocals and Talking Heads choppy rhythms, especially on The Great Defector, this is the sound of the lads really enjoying themselves ! Well worth a pop .....

5.0 out of 5 stars another great album 4 Mar 2009
Format:Audio CD
OK lets start by saying i have a very eclectic taste in music but have little time in general for bands like Snow Patrol, Keane and the like however i absolutely love Bell X1, who you could say exist in the same stratosphere as these bands. I think this is because they make their music in a genuine way and you get the feeling they are trying to make music for themselves rather than for the masses or the top 40. Its also because their songs are always fantastic and as with their last 2 records "Music In Mouth" and "Flock" there isnt a bad song on here. Why they havent been as successful as their contemparies is beyond me and im sure after this record the average Joe still wont have any idea who they are but for the rest of us we have another great album to enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius! 3 Mar 2009

We've been waiting a long time since Flock, but it's certainly been worth the wait - Blue Lights on the Runway is Bell X1's best album yet. It's totally addictive and I guarantee that you'll be humming and singing along before you reach the end. "Amelia" and "Light Catches Your Face" are the standouts for me. The Bellies can do no wrong, they're the chocolate at the end of my cornetto... ;)

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this CD. The lyrics are very cleverly written and I would recommend this band to everyone.
They deserve worldwide success.

Having made it big in their native Ireland - The Great Defector made number 3 there recently (despite having a beginning that sounds like the soundtrack to a ZX Spectrum game) - here's another crack at the UK market from Damien Rice's far more interesting former bandmates (hey, it's just an opinion). Clever, witty lyrics and often maddeningly catchy music juxtapose nicely with Paul Noonan's slightly melancholy vocal style, so that you find yourself thinking "did he really just sing that?". In the case of the line "you're just picking the knickers from your arse" in One Stringed Harp, yes he did. They can do sensitive (Light Catches Your Face), they can do quirky (the aforementioned One Stringed Harp), they can - occasionally - rock out a bit (the chorus of Breastfed) and they can certainly entertain.

Oh, and if you've ever heard a song that sounds more like True Stories-era Talking Heads than The Great Defector, it'll have been a track from True Stories by Talking Heads.
