3.0 out of 5 stars Blue about Blue Jazz Guitar 2 Feb 2013
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Lovely collection of tracks and, if all you want to do is listen, then it is fine. However, if you want to know to what or to whom you are listening, the track listing is all over the place so not much help. And there is no additional supporting information. Disappointing. Shame this was not included in the original long review - is someone paid to write these glowing words?

5.0 out of 5 stars Many great performers on jazz guitar... 15 Jan 2011
By C. FULLER TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
There are 35 performances on this set which features many of the innovative and defining artists from the period 1942 to 1960. As with many jazz treatments the source can often be the songbook standards and many classics are included from the likes of Victor Young; Tom Adair & Matt Dennis; Vernon Duke & Yip Harburg; Freed & Lane; the Gershwin's; Turk & Alert; Herbert not to mention Gjango Reinhardt. The overall running time is approx 152 minutes and the liner notes are by Michael Heatley with the nice touch of a photo montage. Good clear sound throughout. Standout performances for me are "Moonlight in Vermont" by Charlie Byrd one of the greatest influences of the jazz guitar. Charlie Lee Byrd (September 16, 1925 - December 2, 1999) was a famous and versatile American guitarist born in Suffolk, Virginia. His earliest and strongest musical influence was Django Reinhardt, the famous gypsy guitarist. Byrd became the American guitarist who best understood and played Brazilian music, especially the Bossa Nova genre. In 1962, Byrd collaborated with Stan Getz on the famous album, Jazz Samba, a recording which pushed bossa nova into the mainstream of North American music. Byrd played a classical guitar with nylon strings using fingerstyle. Plus "Will You Still be Mine" by Mundell Lowe still performing today and whose website tells a great story. A great influence was Charlie Christian (July 29, 1916 - March 2, 1942) an important early performer on the electric guitar, and was cited as a key figure in the development of bebop and cool jazz. He gained national exposure as a member of the Benny Goodman Sextet and Orchestra from August 1939 to June 1941. His single-string technique combined with amplification helped bring the guitar out of the rhythm section and into the forefront as a solo instrument. This is yet another top addition to the Not Now stable of releases and excellent value too.
