Amazon.co.uk Review

The idea is clever but the movie can't seem to pull its comic weight: Steve Martin plays a mob informer who is placed in the witness-protection program and doesn't fit into the suburban California life the Feds have picked out for him. Rick Moranis is the FBI agent assigned to protect him. Martin mugs his way through the role of an Italian wise guy from the New York streets, but his performance is never more than an impersonation. The script of My Blue Heaven leaves a lot to be desired, as well. Director Herbert Ross (The Turning Point) brings some gloss to the production, but he can't seem to do much else with the material. --Tom Keogh

I saw the film on TV, and had such a great time, I bought it for my DVD collection.

In my opinion it is one of the best films Steve Martin has made and he is well supported by his costars. Here Steve Martin really shines and this is high class comedy.

Pairing him up with Rick Moranis is a very good idea. The small FBI agent is remade by the crook, and helped to a better life, by his charge and the tough job of having to look after Steve Martin, in a witness protection job.

In fact Steve Martin becomes a sort of Piper, whose tunes changes everybody associated with him, and in fact the whole town around him.

Steve Martin's character is elegant, ruthlessly and - Beningly crocked and he stands out as the elite liar who can talk himself out of any situation, no matter how obviously guilty he is, he just cannot help himself when the opportunity comes his way - And it is beyond anybody's imagination.

Steven Martin spots the weakness in his victim, as his second nature, and he exploits it to the full in a dialog which is wickedly wonderful.
Everybody knows they have been had, they just don't know how to nail him.

Go for it. See it once a year - It will broaden your smile, I promise :D

When Steve Martn is Good, he is very Good, but when he is the Bad - He is even Better.

Sometimes Steven Martin overplays his part, this is not the case in this film. When he overplays in this film, it is part of the plot.

Granted, this won't count among Steve Martin's greatest contributions to the world of cinematic art, but you have to admit it is among his funnier ones. Not as subtle as some of the others - more like laugh-out funny, with a good dose of the good ol' feel-good-factor. (Some reviewers found his character too cheesy, but I think that's the whole point!)

In fact, I'll go so far as to say that this is one of my favourite 'easy' comedies - the perfect accompaniment to spaghetti bolognese, garlic bread and a cheap bottle of Italian red, all downed in front of the telly whilst reclining on my La-Z-Boy. Simple and cheerful comfort food for the body and mind, when you can't quite face another re-run of Citizen Kane...

Steve Martin is a mobster turned informant in the U.S. Witness Protection Program, but his dishonest habits are hard to break in this clever little comedy. Director Herbert Ross uses a smart screenplay, talented performers, and a great premise to make "My Blue Heaven" work a lot better than most films of its genre. Rick Moranis is the FBI agent who tries to protect Martin from mafia hitmen and more dangerously himself. Joan Cusack is priceless as a local district attorney who wants to get Martin for every little offense he commits while awaiting his court date to testify. William Hickey is also good as one of Martin's shady friends. A good little film overall.
