Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The Nintendo DS is no ordinary console. What on the face of it appears to be merely an upgraded Game Boy Advance is packed with a suite of never-before-seen features which make it unique within the gaming world.

The most obvious new feature is the two screens (DS stands for dual screen), the bottom of which is a touch screen. This makes an enormous difference to the way you play and interact with the game, as you use a stylus or the handy thumb strap to control the action.

The way this works in a game varies enormously, with first person shooter Metroid Prime: Hunters using the touch screen and D-pad to create a control system that’s just as responsive as a PC keyboard and mouse. Other games, like Yoshi’s Touch & Go, have you actually drawing on the touch pad to create platforms, while other games use the extra screen to display inventory or map info.

But there’s more to the DS than even that. It also has a built-in microphone (one new medical game has you operating on patients with the touch screen and reassuring them everything’s going to be okay via the microphone) and it can be connected wirelessly to sixteen or more other consoles. Not only that but some games and utilities even allow it to connect online via Wi-Fi.

Although the DS is far more powerful than the GBA – it can display 3D graphics somewhere between a Nintendo 64 and the GameCube--it is still backwards compatible, so you can play all your old GBA games in single player mode on the same console.

With a battery life of between 6 and 10 hours the Nintendo DS gets pretty much everything right. With a range of games that seem to offer far more originality and imagination than any other home or portable console this is could well be the most exciting new console of 2005. --David Jenkins

5.0 out of 5 stars Nintendo have done it again! 17 Oct 2006
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
The Nintendo Ds blue, what can i say, all the ds' are good but the blue is sophisticated, sexy and isn't tacky looking like the pink one. The stylus is a perfect additive to this little bundle of entertainment. The smooth screen easily kicks off the PSP, advance, etc.

The DS can play Gameboy Advance games which you easily insert at the bottom of the DS.

*NOTE*: Get screen protectors, when your DS gets scratched, there is no going back. (unless you want to pay another hundred pound or so?)

Also when inserting your game chip (DS) make sure the little shiny bit is facing you from the front of the DS. I put mine in the wrong way and it was an absoloute NIGHTMARE. Don't get in the same situation people!

Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
I have purchased this for my partner as a christmas present.
Upon delivery I noticed that it wasn't the bright metallic blue as shown on the picture but a baby blue, which while not the end of the world wasn't all that attractive.
I turned it on to check that it worked and had to charge it and set it up ready. It seems fairly easy to use, the charge has held for well over a week now so the console itself seems okay. I have had to clean it like mad, though - the seller failed to mention how dirty the console was and even now I'm concerned about various bits of dirt stuck in the seams. However, my issue is more with the seller than the product, which seems to be good.

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I received one of these consoles for my 11th birthday and it still works nearly seven years on.
The touch screen has taken a beating from the heavy use and is starting to break and occasionally it does not recognise the Nintendogs game inserted into it (the game that originally came with the console) but that is unsurprising after the many hours of joy this console gave me.
Don't let that put you off from buying it- it is much better value for money than the DS lite-the battery lasts for hours and hours, although the screen is not as bright as the DS lite, and also it is much more durable-perfect for being taken everywhere and played at all hours (Perfect for taking on holiday!). It has many good features, especially the download play-through which you can download demos from other DS, DS lite, DSI, DSI XL and 3DS consoles and also from the Wii Nintendo channel. Another favourite is the Gameboy advance slot in which you can play older games from the DS's predecessors the Gameboy advance and the Gameboy advance SP.
Compared to the newer consoles, the original DS will still give them a run for their money considering the robustness of this console, something which seems to have been compromised in the newer consoles(especially the DS lite). After a year or two the DS lite's screen is already showing damage, and has broken pixels across both screens, and the battery will only last about two hours between charges.
If you're looking for a long lasting console, want long battery life and aren't bothered about a very basic integrated camera, or '3D features' -which seem somewhat gimmicky (and will probably be cast aside following the release of the next handheld nintendo console) then get one of these! Your child will love it-and you'll love the price!
