Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Firstly beware: this is not the earlier 60's recording the U.S. reviews below would have you believe, but rather a live German recording at the Stadhall Chemnitz on 1 Nov. 1978. Though this is Herman in his final decade, and having to work furiously to pay off his tax arrears, this remains a committed and electric performance by a band which includes Joe Lovano, Dave Lalama and Frank Tiberi (who led his outfit after Woody's death).

German engineering ensures the sound quality is very good, and many of the pieces provide a tasty cross-section of Woody's career output. There's a lovely version of 'Blue Flame' and 'Early Autumn', a melting 'Laura', a deconstructed 'Take the A Train' and a brassy 'Four Brothers'. The band also have a great workout on Coltrane's 'Giant Steps' and a personality-filled 'I Got it Bad and that Ain't Good'. 'What are you doing the rest of your Life' is smoothly seductive, but the real surprise is their 'recent recording' of Faure's 'Pavane', which is both sensitive and imaginative. Just over an hour of fine music.
