Book Description

15 Feb 2011

In the dead of night, a covered wagon driven by a hooded, faceless being is careering through the forest at breakneck speed. Inside the wagon, sit two jittery Goblin men: Grot and Mouldy. Suddenly, the contents of the sack they are staring at begin to glow...

Consumed by the desire for revenge, the Goblins' wicked Dark Mistress sets diminutive winged telepaths, the Pahleen, a riddle they must work out if they are to get back what they have lost and save the world known as Wadjamaat.

Desperately, King Kilron searches high and low but fi nds no clue. Then, something unexpected happens in Haggles Cove and therace is on again...but there is a sting in the tail. To have a chance of succeeding, Kilron must now face the prospect of doing something always forbidden to his ancient race.

Meanwhile, unaware of the planet's 'ticking clock', the cosmopolitan human population of the walled naval port of Bellana are busy getting their wondrous Mermaid Stadium ready for the grand Argia Final. With canine companion Wolf in tow, country girl Hahmi Merkin gets a hostile reception when she enters the city. She heads for the sanctuary of blacksmith friend, Aristide Brindle's house where she leaves her horse and cart. Entrusted with his son's 'paddywhack', she sets off for the stadium. What happens after that is beyond even her wildest imagining...

Throughout this magical and marauding tale, love, trust and a craving to belong do battle against prejudice, religious fanaticism and the lust for power - and the stakes could not be higher.

5.0 out of 5 stars An engaging novel... 21 Nov 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Hobb Whitton has created a cast of inventive and colourful characters in his fantasy novel, Blue Fire Burning. The curtain opens on two amusing and devious goblin men, Grot and Mouldy, who as you may expect, set the scene by their names alone, for this fast-paced ride. Enter the Dark Mistress and King Kilron and his telepaths - the story is never dull for one moment! Once again, the traditional mainstream genres are challenged by the Indie authors; a brave and topical move. All credit to Hobb for combining his magical and mysterious fantasy with humour, romance and adventure. Lovely to see a carefully published ebook, showing how much time and trouble the author has taken with its production.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a read! 5 Nov 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
For anybody who reads fantasy novels and enjoys them, I recommend the award winning epic 'Tales of the Pahleen: Blue Fire Burning'. I loved it. It's a credit to the author, Hobb Whittons. He really is an accomplished writer.
All in all, I can't recommend this book too highly for anyone who wants to explore the world of fantasy (and who doesn't?). Newbie or veteran, if you're looking for a great adventure to steer your ship to far off lands, where Goblins dwell and Dark Mistresses plot, let Hobb Whittons take charge and be your navigator.
Enjoy this roller coaster of a fantasy story, which is so well written you will be unable to tear yourself away before the stinging climax. It flows with the consistency of honey; rich and seductive with the feel of magic. Only a few novelists have the ability to capture a reader from start to finish. Whittons is one of them.
I have been reading fantasy for many years now, so I didn't write this review lightly. I am very hard to please. If you are only going to buy one book this year, make it 'Blue Fire Burning'. You won't be disappointed. I certainly wasn't.
