After the chaotic skurmish at Jibral castle, Shu and his fellow shadow wielders decide to take the fight to Grankingdom and face-off against the evil lord Nene himself. Armed with each of their own shadows, the small group of young heroes set off to defeat the bad guy and save the world. Along the way, the team get ambushed by the ruthless general Logi and his band of shadow wielding mercenaries and when things seem grim it all comes down to the shy and beautiful Kluke to try and harness her very own shadow power within her.
While the characters remain very two dimensional and often un-interesting, the plot seems to be going somewhere in this release. Not only is there progression with the battle against Nene and Grankingdom, but there is a hint of bigger things to come with the Extra Seven. Put simply, the extra seven are the last seven pages out of the original copy of the book of beginning which contain incredible power to people with shadow abilities. When these one-of-a-kind pages are stolen, another path is opened up for our heroes and the plot finally begins to thicken.
Even though the characters are quite un-original, there is plenty of comic relief to be had with them. Most of which involving the beautiful and; may i Add - incredibly well endowed Bouquet and the perverted little Devee known as Marumaro. Put these two together and lots of hilarity ensues. I was actually quite surprised that such a cutesy and childish looking anime contains so much crude and low brow humour. Not many episodes go by without Marumaro fondeling one of the poor girls breasts or acting in some way inappropriate. Though this is all there is to Marumaro's personality at this stage, I didn't care because I was too busy laughing at him. Another thing I like about Blue Dragon is the exquisite background art. The character designs etc all look quite nice, but it is the backgrounds that really stood out in my opinion with some really nice attention to detail and some colourful, attractive scenery making this a gorgeous looking show.
A must buy for hardcore fans of the game. If not then there is some decent comedy and an average plot that shows some potential on offer here that might entertain anime fans. Otherwise, The childish look of the series along with the fact that it's a spin off may scare some people away. There are definetly better animes out there to look at beforehand, but Blue dragon is certainly one to come to if you fancy an easy watch and some cheering up.
