Very disappointing 28 Jun 2010
By Will S
Format:Audio CD
Howard's voice is still very strong, but he is let down here by some poor songs. Don't expect anything in the soul idiom - I would describe this as country blues - maybe it's just a question of taste, but this is not how I remember Howard Tate.

I was really looking forward to someting new from the great and seriously underrated Howard Tate, but this is such a let down.

The problem is just the quality of the songs. They just are not good enough and do not do justice to a man who has one of the greatest soul voices of all time. Nothing stands out, nothing hits anywhwere near the mark. So many people are not familiar with Howard, but he really needs to get some top writers working with him or else simply stick out an album of covers.

The blurb on Amazon spoke of a 'killer backing band' and 'superb songwriting' but this is never true in a million years. They may be competent musicians, but the album is not well produced and the songs sound leaden and just plod along. Perhaps Howard needs something similar to what Solomon Burke had with top writers writing for him (on Don't Give Up On Me) - Van Morrison, Elvis Costello etc. Even a Rick Rubin to work on some old songs a la Johnny Cash would be wonderful. We can live in hope.

Outstanding fresh material with the tried and true 15 Sep 2009
By B. H. Burnopp - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Jon Tiven & Sally Tiven teamed up with the best talent in the business to write songs for Soul/Blues icon Howard Tate. Guest appearances by singer songwriter giant, Dan Penn, groovemaster extraordinaire Steve Cropper add cream to an already rich blend of deep soul music. The Tivens cover the spectrum of emotion with their songwrtiting for Howard. The uptemo lumpty lump 12 bar "First Class" is a fun song that will make you laugh as you imagine Howard enjoying his life in "First Class". The dark "Stalking My Woman"tells a magnificent story about a man insanely in love with his woman and his insane behavior demonstrating his inability to let her go. Howard Tate is a young man in his heart, soul, and singing voice. Howard is about 70 years old and was rediscovered about 8-10 years ago by Jerry "Rags" Ragovoy Philly songwriter of legendary status. Howard has resumed his recording career since his rediscovery and "Blue Day" is Howard's latest and among his best recordings to date. The recording "Blue Day" comes together with great material, great singing, and major league musicianship on all cuts. The production of the recording is first class recording art. The professional use of keyboards, wah wah pedal, harp and horns, guitars, and drums make the songs jump right in your lap. You just want to wrap your arms around the music and hold it real close.

I would classify "Blue Day" a must have essential for any collection for any style Blues/ R&B song lover.
