Outstanding 7 Nov 2005
Format:Audio CD
You have to hear Maura O'Connell's voice to believe it. Her deep alto, expressive phrasing and emotional song interpretations just aren't like anyone else's.
This native of Ireland, now a Nashville resident, has spent her artistic life genre-hopping, and that makes her hard to classify. Suffice it to say O'Connell sings what she likes, from traditional Irish music to Delta jazz, and does a darn good job of it, too.

O'Connell has married an unmistakable deep, rich, flexible voice and her signature talent for finding what's most potent in the work of a select but broad array of genre-jumping songwriters, to pull the listener right along with her--to the heart of a song.
This is her best but she does nothing that is less than very good. Start here if you don't know her music....or start anywhere. You will look further.

This is one of Maura O'Connells albums for Warner Brothers, who seemed to be trying to turn her into a Nashville / MoR artist with little trace of her Irish roots. The voice is still great, but overall it isn't my sort of thing. She's done several much better albums.

This is the ultimate Maura O'Connell album. The songs she has chosen enable her to demonstrate the full range of her talents - the power of her voice, her uncanny ability in interpreting lyrics with consummate sensitivity and above all, that wonderful warm personality which quite simply, allied to her voice, makes her one of the world's greatest performers. All her qualities are evident to the listener in the definitive track of this album 'I would be stronger than that'. Maura does full justice to the talents of all the writers whose work she performs on the CD.
