Review

''a compelling read' (The Children's Bookseller, 9th March 2001 )

'Strong and searching novels that cover very difficult scenarios...The humanity of the protagonist really shines through in the expert characterisation and writing, making these novels really challenge the reader's empathy. I would strongly recommend these stark and thought provoking titles.' (The Bookseller, 13th April 2001 )

'This book was breathtaking!' (Amazon Customer Review )

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart Wrenching Book, 24 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Blue (Bite) (Paperback)
Anna Goldsmith is a bright, pretty and intelligent girl, who falls under the spell of a girl called Hayley, when she moves from London to Yorkshire with her family. They begin as best friends, but soon Hayley turns vicious and starts making Anna's life a living hell...This story shows how a happy, well-adjusted, 14-year-old loses all her self-esteem and sinks lower into desperation, and soon her actions have devastating consequences...

This is a MUST read book, with strong messages for people of all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blue, 29 July 2001

The most gripping and heart rendering childrens book i have read in a long time. The book follows the life of a young teenager moving house and starting a new school. She gets friendly with one of her class mates who soon becomes her worst enemy.Sue Mayfield shows how bullying in schools can turn a pupil to desperation. The book is formatted very well. Once picked up I could not put it down. Unsure right to the last page how things are going to turn out. Recommended for ages 11 upwards and mostly girls.

4.0 out of 5 stars An easy read, 15 Mar 2006
By A Customer
This review is from: Blue (Bite) (Paperback)
I don't understand why this book has received such harsh criticisms. I read it when I was younger and, like so many teenage girls, being bullied (although not to the extent Anna is being bullied in this book). I thought it really captured the way bullies (particularly female ones) manage to manipulate situations and make everyone think that the victim is worthless- most of all the victim themself.
So many people will be able to identify with this: there's the perspective of Anna (the girl being bullied), her mother (the blissfully unaware parent) and the friend, Melanie, who doesn't know how to help.
At the time this opened my eyes and showed me just how common these situations are, and really emphasises the one thing that many people being bullied forget: just who is the worthless person in these scenarios.
Simple language and short chapters make this book accessible to anyone, although younger teenage girls will get the most out of it.
