I was completely hooked on this book, and didn't really see where it was going until we got there. The way it is written gets you thinking, who is telling the truth? There is no way of telling. A very cleverly written story of a lecturer who falls in infatuation with a student.

This has to be the funniest satire both about campus life and creative writing courses written since Randall Jarrell's Pictures of an Institution. Swenson's entrapment by the near-psychotic but gifted pupil Angela Argo at a time whn his own creative flame is sinking low is as hilarious as it is affecting. I was completely hooked, and roared with laughter in many places. The perfect novel to read if (as I was) ill in bed.

Francine Prose, with wit and authority and compassion, has created a wonderfully modern monster story in which victim and predator are equally vivid. It is funny and sad and deeply anti-establishment, bordering on the seditious.
