Ike Quebec sits in jazz heaven rightly alongside Webster and Hawkins and Young as great saxophonists who paint pictures in the imagination as their music floats round the room.

Blue and Sentimental is perhaps his masterpiece featuring Paul Chambers on Bass, Philly Joe Jones on drums and Grant Green on guitar and the spaces sing as sweetly as the music.

Quebec is an unsung hero of Blue Note, first recording with them in 1944 he acted amongst many other things as a talent scout introducing countless up and coming names to Blue Note - including Dexter Gordon.

This album is one of the great jazz albums of all time and any collection missing it has a serious space - easily remedied by purchasing this stunning RVG edition.

A thoroughly enjoyable album. A relaxed small group setting, some great tunes pleasingly delivered by players at the top of their game. Tenorist Ike Quebec has a rich, compelling style for which the sparse guitar work of Grant Green makes a perfect foil. Paul Chambers (bass) and drummer Philly Joe Jones underplay beautifully achieving intimacy but with taut dynamics - nothing bland about the session. Blue & Sentimental, the album's eponymous opening track, sets the scene. There are echos a-plenty of the original Basie recording and Quebec harkens back to Herschel Evans' saxophone style and tone. All the tunes are memorable. Blues for Charlie is Grant Green's tribute to Charlie Christian. There are some fine ballads and a version of Cole Porter's It's allright with me which concludes the session in a tastefully rollicking way. Just great!Blue & Sentimental

This December 1961 session was one of the last recording sessions before he succumbed (aged 44) to lung cancer within two further years. His early career was essentially with big bands, including that of Cab Calloway. Although he was recorded both as leader and sideman he was an infrequent visitor to recording studios during the fifties, although he worked in the background for Blue Note. Critic Alex Henderson wrote, "Though he was never an innovator, Quebec had a big, breathy sound that was distinctive and easily recognizable, and he was quite consistent when it came to down-home blues, sexy ballads, and up-tempo aggression." That comment is born out on this album where many of the tracks are blues or ballads. One can appreciate the fine tone of his tenor playing, although he doubles as support pianist on most tracks too. The rest of the quartet is Grant Green (gtr) (who contibutes a blues dedicated to Charlie Christian), Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones who need no further introduction.
One track has a different line-up with GG, Sonny Clark, Sam Jones and Louis Hayes.
This is a great album for anyone who admires fine musicianship and finely crafted blues tinged ballads.

This album is easy to review as the playing is first class and the recorded sound superb. Ike Quebec is a master of the hard-bop sax. This album is one of the finest in the Blue Note catalogue.

Mr Quebec at his best. This is a rare Blue note recording I beleive(?). He play the sax tremendlesly well, so sweat and tender. Great recording.
